I shared Emma’s quilt yesterday, so today it’s Charlotte’s turn! This was her entry into the youth category that will be on display at QuiltCon 2022.
Charlotte had a very clear vision from the start, and sketched a series of expanding squares. Construction was simple enough, since we could achieve the effect she wanted with a large courthouse steps block. She chose her fabrics and instructed me what order they go in, and I cut all the strips. Then, we sat at the machine together. I guided the fabric under the needle while she pressed the foot pedal and thread cutter.
Once the quilt top was completed, she wanted to add a heart to the middle so we used fusible applique to do just that. Hearts have been her favorite shape for several years now, so it was a very appropriate addition!
I let Charlotte do her own longarm quilting as well! You can see a video of her in action on my Instragram. Let’s just say she did not lack for confidence or speed — I had to keep telling her to slow down. Ha! But I love the organic, looping shapes she created on her quilt top.
This quilt is called “Tunnels” and Charlotte’s artist statement read:
I picked this quilt because I like tunnels. The heart fabric is the exact same fabric as my quilt on my bed. I did the quilting on my mom’s big machine. I’m going to show it to my friends.
The stats:
- Quilt measures 21″ square.
- Top fabrics are all Speckled by Ruby Star Society in shades that Charlotte chose from my stash. She also chose a scrap of a Tula Pink wideback for the heart.
- Backing is Bloom wideback in Peony by Ruby Star Society.
- Binding is Speckled by Ruby Star Society.
- Longarm quilted by Charlotte on my Handiquilter Avante with Aurifil 50 wt thread.
p.s. I’m doing a 31 day blogging challenge.
