Enjoying // my first true flex Friday — no work, no kids, no visitors — since August and I am so, so, so very excited about it! That statement really needs more exclamation points. !!!!!!!!!
Planning // to spend my day as follows, more or less: go for a run, get a pedicure, check out a Janome sewing machine, do the One Little Word prompt for this month, start sewing a mug rug for a swap, and make peanut butter bars for dinner with friends tonight.
Running // again, after December’s unintended break. I started back up with Couch to 5K last week and completed all three “Week 2” workouts. I’ve done two of the “Week 3” workouts this week with the final one to come today. They’ve all been treadmill runs after the girls are in bed, which means that there are three nights each week where I basically get nothing done except for a run and that’s frustrating. But I really want to make getting back into shape a priority right now, so if all I do is a run, that’s still good enough.
Washing // Oliver the Owl, the “mascot” for Emma’s class. Each kid gets to take him home when they are the star student, so he’s been hanging out at our house for the last two weeks. We’ve been taking pictures of Emma doing fun things with Oliver for his scrapbook, so last night he came with us to the school’s biannual spaghetti dinner…and ended up with spaghetti sauce on his head. Because, DUH, spaghetti and 3-year-olds. So whose brilliant idea was it to take Oliver to the spaghetti dinner? Oh right. That would be me.
Researching // mattresses. Jose and I desperately need a new one because we’re both tired of waking up creaky and sore. (I refuse to believe age could be causing this. I’m not old yet!) I’m giving some serious thought to trying one of the online mattress retailers — Casper, Saatva, Leesa, etc. This seems to be a newer thing but I’ve read some good reviews, their prices are excellent, and many of them offer trial periods just like a lot of stores do. Have any of you bought a mattress online? Would you?

Share what you find out on mattress shopping! Byron and I would like to get a new one and we’re definitely overwhelmed and also had a lot of sticker shock at the store. Not sure how’d you buy a mattress online without testing out its firmness. I don’t know. Help?!

We bought a mattress on Overstock.com, of all places! It’s a foam with a natural foam topper, and we’ve loved it. It was fairly cheap, and came rolled up tightly, which was hilarious to unpack.

My strong recommendation would be to NOT buy a mattress online. I bought one online for Isla off something like matresses.com. I don’t remember the URL but in any case there must have been something like 3000 positive reviews, but I was quite disappointed in it. It just not that supportive. I’m no mattress expert, but it seems very low quality to me. After that I resolved never again to buy a mattress without seeing it in person. For a 30 pound 3-year-old, it doesn’t matter that much but for two adults, you want a good mattress.
What size bed do you guys have?
Sarah says
King size. I guess my feeling is, it’s not like you get a really good feel for how you’ll sleep on a mattress from 5 minutes at a store either. So I dunno what the best way to go is!

Honestly, we splurged on the sleep number bed and I have NEVER been happier with a mattress. We both love it.

We bought our mattresses at IKEA (I know! Not the first place to think of, really! But we bought our bed there as well and it made sense to me to be able to try the exact same setup there) and went there on a weekday morning, which meant we were basically the only customers. This again meant we could try and retry all the mattresses for as long as we wanted and were lucky to have a great sales person coaching us through. We ended up with two favorites, and I went back to try them once more a few days later and made the decision. I LOVE my new mattress! 🙂
