Soooo it’s kind of a stretch to call this a “work in progress” post, but seeing as how I just had a baby two weeks ago and haven’t exactly made it back to my sewing machine yet, I’m sure you can all forgive me…
I recently spent several weeks on Instagram admiring Jodi Godfrey‘s progress on (and eventual completion of) a beautiful Fair Isle quilt. I’m not usually a fan of more “traditional” patterns, but I do seem to like a subset of them when created with more modern fabrics. She used fabric from Anna Maria Horner’s new Loominous fabric line, so when Massdrop put a fat quarter bundle of Loominous up for sale, I decided to buy one.
Now: I get to decide what to do with it! Although I have a couple other quilts in the queue first, I’m considering a lot of different options:
Sources: top row 1, 2, 3; middle row 4, 5, 6; bottom row 7, 8, 9
Ugggh, it’s going to be tough to decide what to make! I’m really tempted to make a full-size Rebel quilt since I loved the mini I made for the Alison Glass swap (bottom left). I’m also tempted to go more traditional and make a version of a Farmer’s Wife quilt (middle right), which I first heard about from Jen and now keeps popping up in my Instagram feed. And then again, something pretty simple like that horizontal strip quilt (top right) might work really well with this colorful collection.
Decisions, decisions…

Congrats on the new addition! I’ve been leaning towards a Farmer’s Wife quilt myself but out of your choices, I’m leaning toward the plus quilt. Should show the prints well and is still more modern.

I agree, the plus quilt would probably look fabulous! And pretty easy piecing there too… Argh, so many choices!

I would like any of them 🙂

What kind of sewing machine do you recommend? I feel overwhelmed trying to decide. It will be used mostly for home décor, not clothes. I was given an old (40-year-old) Singer but should I get something more up to date?

So I have to admit that I don’t really know a ton about sewing machines. I have owned 2 — my first one came from Walmart, and my current one is a slight upgrade that I bought from a local quilt shop during Quilt Festival. Both are Brother brand, but that’s really just coincidence.
If you have a sewing shop in your area, I would recommend paying them a visit and talking to them about what you want to be able to do. They can go over different features and stitches — and also different price ranges — to help you make a decision. In my experience sometimes sewing shops can be a little pushy with machines, or try to upsell you, but as long as you stick to your guns it shouldn’t be a problem.

I appreciate your advice! And it’s somehow reassuring to know that someone with your creative talents didn’t buy the most expensive machine on the market.

The middle one looks exactly like the one jamberry wrap you just got!

I know! I picked that one solely because it looked like a quilt. 🙂
