Recovering // From another jam-packed weekend. Summer + fun events + baby’s impending arrival has meant a LOT of stuff on the to-do list lately. We took Emma to the circus on Saturday afternoon and had a good time. (Honestly though, she refused to nap and thus was totally wired, so circus might have been even better with a well-rested preschooler!) It was funny to see how much of the circus is still basically the same as it was 30 years ago. Emma liked the “elephants and the lions and the tigers!”
Yesterday we went to Ikea — which is always an expedition — but Emma was a much better sport about the whole thing since we went in the morning and thus she was rested. In the photo above, “I am sleeping Mommy, so we have to be very quiet!” She basically thought Ikea was her own giant playhouse. We even ate lunch there, which I had never done before, and the food (meatballs, mostly) actually wasn’t too bad.
Wanting // To just sit in an air conditioned room for the next month. I just about melted every time I went outside over the weekend. Ugh. We somehow got lucky with a mild (for Houston, anyway) June, but July has been H.O.T.
Working // From home today, because a guy is here painting the baby’s room! We called him after seeing several recommendations on the neighborhood’s Facebook page, and the quote he gave us was low enough to justify just paying him instead of having to deal with the hassle of doing it ourselves. (The ceiling in baby’s room is 11 or 12 feet tall, which made it a bit more daunting than Emma’s room was when we painted it 3 years ago.) Yaaaay for another item checked off the list!
Finishing // My package for the Texas Mini Quilt Swap. I haven’t posted much of the mini quilt itself because I’m afraid if my partner happens to be following me, she’ll realize it’s for her. But the swap also required an “extra” so I made a bluebonnet (above) that I’m going to incorporate into a simple tote bag. This folded paper card was the inspiration, which I turned into a paper-piecing pattern. I really like how it turned out!
Pondering // Our family’s eating habits. Emma’s never had a soda, and she thinks fruit is a legitimate dessert. I, on the other hand, drink soda daily and think fruit can be a dessert…when paired with chocolate, that is. I often find myself wondering why my standards are different for her than for myself. Is it just that it’s easier to enforce good habits on someone else than it is to force them upon myself?

One of my personal parenting philosophies is Do as I say, not as I do.
With that being said, I mostly gave up soda years ago, and I really don’t miss it. I did drink it while pregnant, though. I find it easier to eliminate than to cut back.

We’re very “do as we say” as well, although I can see how some of my habits have improved as my kids have gotten old enough to notice. (They look at the number of Oreos in the pack and calculate how many desserts they’ll get – agh, math skills – it is difficult to sneak any!)
My goal lately, instead of counting calories or carbs, is to just try to follow the rules we have for them as far as how often they are given snacks and what counts as a snack, etc. I’m a little sad about how much of a challenge it is.
My 10 year old has made sarcastic comments about the difference in acceptable amounts of “screen time” for her and for me as well. 🙂
