So, I work, and I work on reminding myself that I am still a beat in my girl’s heart even when I’m not beside her.
What Sarah Brightman’s ‘Postponed’ Mission Says About Space Tourism | TIME
Sarah Brightman, who was scheduled to be the first space tourist to the ISS in several years, has cancelled her trip. She cited personal reasons, although it’s probably not inappropriate to speculate that the recent Progress failure may have had something to do with it as well.
I liked this article, which philosophized a bit about the type of person who travels in space, and particularly this thought:
The late Jack Swigert, command module pilot for Apollo 13—a man who clearly knew what it felt like when everything falls to pieces around you—once reflected on why lunar astronauts never spoke terribly lyrically about their journeys, often describing what they saw with off-the-shelf adjectives like “awe-inspiring” or “incredible.” The explanation, he said, is that you can either go to the moon, or you can appreciate the going, but not both. The very thing that qualifies you to make the trip—a coolness, a detachment in the face of the deadly and improbable place you find yourself—disqualifies you to describe it in terribly resonant terms
It’s easy to say we should send artists and poets into space. It’s harder to actually do that.
Behind the Doodle: Sally Ride | Google
Google had an awesome doodle a couple weeks ago celebrating the life of Sally Ride. I really enjoyed this short “behind the scenes” video about the person who drew it also.
