It was a quiet weekend. Friday night was game night, the first in…well, a very long time. Saturday night we went downtown to the Rockets game, where the team played miserably. And yesterday while Gavin and Jose watched samurai movies, I went with Jen and Carina to get a pedicure. Carina got purple fingernails AND toenails and took the whole thing quite seriously, while Jen and I noted that we were both in our 20s before we ever set foot in a nail salon.
And voila, today is Monday. It is also chilly, gray, and drizzly outside which is pretty much the worst kind of weather to go with a Monday. On top of that, I have a million little tasks on my plate — schedule this meeting, answer that email, practice my Russian adjectives, track down my professor in the next 36 hours, call Comcast, find out if the Apple store has diagnosed my sick iMac yet, call the mechanic…
My professor? Well I got readmitted to UHCL to finish my M.A. but I also need to get signed up for the thesis project class. Which means I need them to approve the class for me, so that I can register. And he hasn’t answered my email, so I resorted to the phone. And I HATE the phone. Alas, so far I’ve only gotten through to his secretary but I’m getting close. Oh and did I mention the deadline is tomorrow?
Comcast? I need a cablecard so we can finally ditch our piece-o-crap DVR and use the Tivo I got from Woot a couple weeks ago. But it turns out I have to actually go to a physical location to get a card. Annoying. But at least it’s on my way home…
iMac? My iMac came down with a serious case of brain freeze on Saturday. After much self-diagnosis (thank goodness for the internet), I think I’ve narrowed it down to either a fan or a hard drive problem. It’s currently at the Apple store where they’re running some kind of super-diagnostic that takes hours and hours. It’s not a huge deal if I need a new hard drive (because my data is all backed up — back up your data, people!), but this is the first time having a Mac has bitten me. I could replace a PC hard drive myself in about 15 minutes. I can’t replace an iMac hard drive without professional help. (The online tutorials scare me right from step 1 — popping off the glass using suction cups.)
The mechanic? Because my car is having power steering issues. They looked at it on Friday and said I needed to replace two hoses that are leaking, but they didn’t have the parts in stock. So for the weekend, they topped off the power steering fluid and voila — no more groaning noises when I turn! They’re right that there is a leak somewhere — Jose and I looked inside on Saturday and noticed wet spots next to the hoses. But one of the hoses they want to replace is a $220 part. $220 for a single hose! So I’m just going to monitor the leak for now and get it repaired in a few months.
The power steering is the 3rd of four maintenance/repair items I’ve had to do for my Xterra in the last 3 months. Why does everything break at once?

I feel your pain on “Why does everything break at once?” I feel like my house is starting to fall apart around my ears – expensive hard to reach light bulbs going out, moss on the roof, water in the crawl space, toilet running, … Grrr.

Thankfully our house is still new enough that we haven’t had house troubles….YET. I know it’s just a matter of time though!
