Amber Elliott recently put out a call for blocks for the #ThreadsSpeakQuilt — a group quilt featuring messages of protest. We were asked to make one 10″ block in low volume fabrics, embroidered with our personal message in the form of a haiku.
With the upheaval happening at my own agency this year, and the recent release of the FY2026 budget that proposes to slash NASA’s budget by 25% and cut our workforce by nearly 6,000 civil servants…well, it wasn’t hard to decide what my protest message would be.
“On to Mars” they shout
while defunding science and
firing engineers
The hypocrisy of this administration and its goons talking about sending humans to Mars, while simultaneously gutting government space and science programs to a level that will take decades to recover from, is unfathomable.
My heart breaks for my NASA community.

Thank you for speaking out. I love this block & the haiku!
I hope we can all see this quilt when it’s done. Your Haiku is so fitting.
I will share it here when I can!
I couldn’t agree more. Common sense seems to be sadly missing in our “leaders”. Can’t wait to see the finished quilt!
Oh my gosh thanks for letting me/us know about this project! Is there a site as well or just a hashtag? I’d love to participate but I don’t have social media. Thanks for yours <3
Unfortunately the call for contributions is already past, but I’ll try to share another post when the quilt is completed in a few months!
This is a tragedy. I’m a Canadian and with engineers in my family, I understand the narrow mindedness of this current administration. I love your block.
Well said. And with the public breakup between 47 and Musk, it’s only getting weirder. We value your contribution, work, and continuing to show up at NASA in the middle of this storm.
