This is my third year as a member of the Modern Quilt Guild’s board of directors. Whenever I’m asked what it’s like to be on the board, my answer is usually some variation of “it’s different than I expected, but it’s been very rewarding and I enjoy it.” I’ve learned a ton about how non-profit organizations operate, and being part of the small team tasked with ensuring a healthy future for the MQG is very satisfying.
For the last 3 years, we’ve had a small “Ask Me Anything” table at QuiltCon so that members and other visitors to the show can come chat with us, ask questions, give feedback and suggestions, and more. After two years of a pretty blah space, my fellow board member Dianne had the wonderful idea to make a group quilt to hang at our AMA table!

Dianne spearheaded the effort to identify colors (using the MQG and QuiltCon logos), collect blocks, and piece them into a quilt top. She then mailed it to me and I quilted it, bound the edges, and added a hanging sleeve.

For the quilting, I took advantage of the opportunity to try a few new things on a quilt that wouldn’t have to get juried in to hang in the show! (Ha.) I used wool batting for the first time and love the puffiness it added. I also used dark monofilament thread for the quilting, which I had only used with my longarm once before.

I noted the maker of each block on a label on the back. The blocks on the top row, from left to right, were made by Karin King, Vikki Gray, Vivika DeNegre, Frances Silverman, and Candy Parker. The blocks on the bottom row, from left to right, were made by Karen Womack, me, Dianne Gates-Anderson, Karen Cooper, and Aleeda Crawley.
We were all so pleased with how it turned out, and the quilt got many compliments during the show in February!
