Back in April, Ruby Star Society hosted the #AntiSewcialSewAlong and encouraged makers to use their free bunting pattern to make fun messages! The idea looked cute and fun, so I jumped on board — and even though I didn’t finish my bunting on sewalong weekend, I was able to wrap it up soon after.
A couple weeks ago I finally got some command clips and hung it up in my sewing room! It’s ridiculously hard to get a good photos of the bunting with my big ol’ window underneath, but you get the idea. Haha.
The words are from a famous Carl Sagan quote: “The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”
Or, put another way: “The lives and deaths of the stars seem impossibly remote from human experience and yet we’re related in the most intimate way to their lifecycles. The very matter that makes us up was generated long ago and far away in red giant stars.”
Once I chose what my bunting would say, it was clear that I needed to use some of my precious star-themed fabrics. There were 18 letters, so I chose 9 favorites in a rough palette of navy/blue/purple. For the letters, I chose the sunburst print from the same Ruby Star collection I used for my Sunsparks quilt. I had to order a bit more of it to make enough bias binding, but it worked perfectly!
Some people collect fabric from certain designers like Tula Pink or Ruby Star; I collect star and space-themed fabrics! To be honest, there are fabrics in the star/space category that aren’t great — too bland, or too traditional, or just too on-the-nose. But over the years I’ve collected quite a few that I love, and I’m really enjoying having bits of them now hanging in my sewing room.
Hooray for fun, fast, and personally meaningful projects!

Love it! It’s so you. What a great way to showcase your star and space fabrics. Also love it above the window.
