Hello and welcome to my stop on the virtual book tour for Round Fabric Art Bowls, a new book by written by Kirsten Fisher and available now from C&T Publishing.
When Kirsten reached out to me last month to ask if I’d be interested in taking a look at her book, I was immediately intrigued. Fabric art bowls? What’s a fabric art bowl?? Turns out it’s a really clever way of turning a two-dimensional quilt block design into a three-dimensional fabric bowl that can be used for whatever you can imagine, from decor to cat bed. (Yes, really.)
Round Fabric Art Bowls is a followup to Kirsten’s first book, Modern Fabric Art Bowls, and combines the same general techniques with new shapes and designs. I’m usually pretty good at figuring out how different quilts or quilt-adjacent objects are constructed, but these bowls were a new challenge. The book contains several chapters with step-by-step instructions for each step of the bowl-making process, from choosing fabric to final assembly. The second half of the book is dedicated to 6 specific bowl designs ranging from a simple bowl that can be made with a single fabric to a complex double-star design.
I wanted to try out the technique myself, and chose to work on Bowl 3, the Flower Bowl. I love the fussy-cut stripes Kirsten used for the sample in her book (seen above on the right), so I dug through my stash to find something similar and found two Carolyn Friedlander prints — one for the flower petals and one for the background — that were perfect for my version!
I finished this bowl top on Friday, so this week I’ll delve back into my stash to find complementary fabrics to use for the outside of the bowl and the binding. I look forward to finding a fun place in our house to display my finished art bowl!
GIVEAWAY: C&T has offered a digital (PDF) copy of Round Fabric Art Bowls for one randomly selected visitor. Leave a comment below for a chance to win! The winner will be selected on Friday, August 25.

Interesting! I’ve made quilted soup bowl cozies, and sewn hand-dyed rope into bowls, but I’m puzzled by how these are constructed. You’ve piqued my interest!
