My friend Tina released her Zip Zip Hooray pouch pattern earlier this week! I helped review the pattern in December and while testing (i.e. making the item) is not a part of my tech editing process, Tina is a friend and fellow Houston MQG member….so when she offered to send me the supplies needed to make my own pouch, I happily agreed.
I was able to use fabrics from my scrap bins for the exterior panels, and a fat quarter for the lining and pocket. Those cute moons are one of my favorites — it’s from an old Cloud 9 line that I used to make this quilt back in 2016. This was my last large-ish scrap and I’ve done some googling but can’t find any more since it was discontinued years ago. Sad face.
The pattern uses fusible foam, which I had not worked with before. It gives the pouch a great weight and stiffness, but the most surprising thing to me was how much I enjoyed quilting my exterior panels onto the foam! It slid through my machine so easily, and the quilting texture is so nice and “puffy.” I’m very intrigued by the idea of using foam instead of batting for small art pieces or wall hangings, and hope to try this out soon.
The pattern has instructions for two types of zipper installations — the standard zipper closure on top plus a zippered welt pocket. I couldn’t resist adding a star keychain/zipper pull. I got a few of these several years ago from Alison Glass’s shop and had somehow never used them!
This pouch only took a couple hours from start to finish, so it was a fun little project to do in the middle of a busy December. You can grab Tina’s Zip Zip Hooray pouch pattern here and enjoy making your own!
