Emma had a really wonderful 4th grade year, and part of that was a great 4th grade teacher! Her teacher is expecting a baby boy this summer, so I asked Emma if she might want to make a quilt? Her eyes lit up and she quickly said “yes!” And so we did.
Emma ended up picking six different shades from my solids stash. We considered several different color possibilities, some with more than 6 fabrics and some with less, and talked through the pros and cons of each before she finally landed on orange, yellow, two greens, and two blues. She liked how she could lay out the pieces in an ordered way similar to the background of her first quilt.
Once we cut squares and she approved the layout, I took care of the rest — this quilt came together in a few days, so there wasn’t a lot of time for us to do the sewing together. I quilted it with an all-over squiggle/stipple on my longarm and stitched the binding on by machine.
I’m happy to report that Emma’s teacher loved it!
The stats:
- Quilt measures 36″ x 36″.
- Top fabrics are from my solids stash — mostly Kona, but I think there may have been a Moda Bella shade in there too.
- Backing and binding is a Carolyn Friedlander for Robert Kaufman wideback print in light blue.
- Pieced with Aurifil 50 wt thread in #2600 (Dove).
- Quilted on my Handi Quilter Avante with Aurifil 50 wt thread in #4659 (Mango Mist – a variegated orange thread).
