Way back in July, Jose and I took advantage of a slow work day for each of us and enjoyed a day date at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston while the girls were at camp/daycare. I’ve been meaning to share a few of the artworks we saw ever since!
We went to see the SunForceOceanLife installation by Ernesto Neto, which was really neat. We also enjoyed several other galleries in the museum’s new wing, which hadn’t yet opened the last time we visited MFAH.
SunForceOceanLife was a large installation created from nylon rope and plastic balls. It hung from the ceiling and you could walk through it!
It’s always fun to be able to physically interact with art, and Jose and I spent at least half an hour wandering around and taking in the view from multiple angles.
Jean Tinguely was known for his kinetic sculptures and artworks, and MFAH had several on display. Unfortunately they are too delicate to run constantly, but there were videos that showed us the art in motion. So neat!
This piece was three dimensional and stood out from the wall. It reminded me of looking up the nozzle of a jet engine.
I was quite taken with several galleries that featured mid-century artworks. In particular, The Adolpho Leirner Collection of Brazilian Constructive Art was really wonderful.
A design like this would be right at home in the quilting world today!
This was a large piece in a main hallway, and drew my eye from across the museum lobby. My favorite color palette and fun geometric shapes!
This piece was also three-dimension, with dozens of “blades” that stood out from the canvas and were painted in different ways so that the appearance of the squares shifted as you walked past and saw the piece from different angles.
I feel fortunate to have such a wonderful art museum nearby and hope Jose and I can manage another day date soon.
p.s. I’m doing a 31 day blogging challenge.

Wow, the Untitled piece by Lee Bontecou looks just like looking up the nozzle of a jet engine!

I’ve been wanting to go back there since we did a visit for the Van Gogh exhibit a few summers ago. I might have to take a solo day date for myself soon!

Until you said that last piece is three-dimensional, it really looked like a Jen Broemel (thread) piece!
