We’re nearing the halfway mark and I’ve yet to write here about my 2021 100 Day Project! Oops! The official* project kicked off earlier this year — on January 31 instead of the usual early April date. And as usual, I had to join in.
I had so much fun making postcards last year that I was a little worried about picking a new project. What could possibly live up to the fun and success of nearly 200 postcards?? But I quickly felt drawn to one of the other ideas I had last year — star blocks, aka #100daysofsaroystars. There are SO many different star quilt blocks out there that the possibilities are endless. And of course the star motif feels particular appropriate for me as a quilter AND aerospace engineer.
I started making star blocks on January 31 and today is day 46. I’ll hit 100 on May 10! I’ve been picking solid fabrics rather spontaneously, choosing a few fabrics each day that I think will work well together — a dark/medium value for the background and lights/medium values for the star. I’m not entirely sure how they will look all together at the end, and it’s certainly possible there will be too many colors and it will end up looking totally crazy. We shall see!
I’m pulling from several different resources to make these blocks, from free tutorials to classic blocks. My most heavily used resource is Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns. I picked up a copy of the new 3rd edition a few months ago and it’s a fabulous reference. The book isn’t a pattern book, so I have to do the math and/or sketch up templates for each block, but I’m enjoying that process, and doing it myself lets me vary the size of each block as I go. The largest stars I’ve made so far are 10″ square, and the smallest are 3″!
There are 50+ days still to go! You can follow along at #100daysofsaroystars.
* The official 100 day project may begin and end on set dates, and I like to join that one…but remember, you can always start a 100 day project on literally any day you want!
