Life rolls on, in its covid-weirdness and otherwise. The girls are both excited for Valentines Day and have had their cards complete for over a week already. Both of their schools continue to do surprisingly (and thankfully) well with handling the pandemic.
While my friends in other parts of the country are stuck inside with massive amounts of snow and 0 degree temperatures, we continue to enjoy what is arguably the best time of year! It’s gray today, but Sunday was gorgeous with clear blue skies and 60 degrees temps. We enjoyed a family bike ride around the neighborhood, complete with a stop to go up and down the “ramps” in front of the pool.
Update: Well, after writing the paragraphs below, I was notified that all the appointments for tomorrow were cancelled. So never mind! I’m not getting the vaccine tomorrow after all.
I am getting my first dose of the vaccine tomorrow.
I hesitate to talk about it here, because I know how inequitable vaccine distribution has been, and I also know that I am lower risk than many, many others.
It seems unfair. It IS unfair.
But the fact remains that I was offered a vaccine through work last week, and have an appointment tomorrow. I was not expecting it, or really, I was expecting it but not until much later in the spring or summer.
I feel a mixture of excitement, relief, gratitude…and guilt. This NYT opinion piece made me feel a little less guilty — “If You’re Offered a Vaccine, Take It” — but it’s still tough to reconcile that I am able to get a shot before, say, some of my kids’ teachers.
I really hope that everyone is able to get access to a vaccine very, very soon.

You should ABSOLUTELY take the vaccine and not feel guilty about it.
But it is also absolutely ridiculous that you were offered it. So so many people over 70 with comorbitidities cannot get a vaccine or love or money.
This just reemphasizes for me that it should be done by age. Period.

I’m sorry your vaccine appointment was cancelled! What a huge bummer! In the last week I have had several friends be able to get it and I am THRILLED (and jealous) for them! My parents have appointments for Saturday. I will be ecstatic when we can get one!

Its crazy you are getting a vaccine through work. Many of the federal agencies here in DC are sending their employees their local health districts to take priority on the vaccines (think “law enforcement” = FBI, DEA, ATF, etc.; everyone necessary for “continuity of government operations” which seems to be somehow self determined, etc; all qualify for vaccines here as essential employees). My agency sent a letter basically saying “get one from your health district if you can, not from us!” The VA governor, MD governor, and DC mayor sent a letter to the President saying “please stop you are using all our vaccines, vaccinate your employees yourselves!”
