This month’s Aurifil Artisan challenge was to make a holiday project — and I ended up making several! Here’s a round-up:
I released my Spinning Star Tree Skirt pattern in early November, and ended up making not one but two tree skirts this year. The first was for my own home. I used Moda Grunge fabrics from my local quilt shop and quilted a simple cross hatch with Aurifil 28wt thread in #2975 (brass). I love how the color of the thread complements the color of the stars on the accent fabric, and gold just feels extra-Christmasy!
I made a second tree skirt for my friend Becca using fabrics from Hawthorne Supply Co. I had planned to quilt this one in the same heavier brass thread — but I was running low! So I quickly came up with Plan B and quilted this skirt in 50 wt #2270 (paprika). Since the fabrics were mostly shades of green and cream, it was fun to add a hint of red with the quilting thread!
It was only fitting to include a couple postcards in my holiday sewing as well — after all, 2020 will long be remembered as “the year of the postcard” in my sewing life. I made the postcard above using one of the blocks from my friend Kitty’s Plant Worry Grow Hope quilt pattern and couldn’t resist adding some twinkle by quilting stars in that same 2020 favorite thread, 28 wt brass. I sent this postcard to my mom!
And this postcard was a quick wonky tree pattern I drafted myself, and made using scraps from last year’s Christmas quilt. I hand stitched a little star on top using Aurifil 12 wt thread and quilted it with simple lines in 50 wt white.
I found a lot of joy in each of these projects this year!
p.s. I’m doing a 31 day blogging challenge.
