Today’s 31 Days of Blogging prompt is “show us your fabric.” I don’t have a huge stash, and it’s also not super well organized…but it works well enough for me!
I don’t have a closet in my sewing room (since it’s technically a dining room) so this 5×5 Ikea bookcase is my primary storage. Nine of the 25 cubbies are dedicated to fabric storage. The rest are filled with notions, books, non-sewing craft supplies, and other things. (It hasn’t changed much since I shared it last year.)
Most of my fabric is cuts of a half yard or less, and the most common size is definitely a fat quarter. The seven bins on the bottom two shelves are dedicated to solids, print fat quarters and partial FQ bundles, widebacks and larger cuts of yardage, and non-cotton fabrics. I’ve also got one entire bin dedicated to Alison Glass fabric — if I had to pick a favorite fabric designer, this should make it clear who it would be! Ha.
The two cubbies at the top have smaller bins where I keep in-work, partially completed, and/or next-up projects, as well as a few more miscellaneous FQ bundles.
This feels like a lot of fabric to me. I’ve already destashed several bundles this year, and should probably get rid of a few more…although I am also hoping to put some of the bundles to good use as pieced backings in the coming months. That “large-ish scraps” bin in particular also needs a clean out, as there are many cuts in there left over from my early days of quilting that I no longer love and will probably never use.
My only other fabric storage is this cheap 3-drawer plastic organizer that fits perfectly under my sewing table. This is where all my smaller scraps go, and where I have pulled 95% of the fabric for all the postcards I’ve made this year. The top drawer is all warm-colored and light neutral scraps. The middle drawer is cool-colored prints and the bottom drawer is cool solids.
I go through these drawers from time to time and toss the smallest pieces, but somehow they are always full! Maybe it’s time for a serious scrap quilt (or two)…
p.s. I’m doing a 31 day blogging challenge.
