I was supposed to be on a beach in Belize right now. Clearly that wasn’t meant to be. But silver lining: there’s a tropical depression over Belize right now anyway. Non-silver lining: it may be headed to Texas? Because that’s what 2020 needs.
Nonetheless, 2020 goes on and we go with it.
May goals update:
+ Finish & file taxes. Fail.
+ Start an email newsletter. Success! I did several hours of behind-the-scenes prep work in May, and sent out my first monthly newsletter yesterday.
+ Make a STEM quilt. Fail. This was going to be an entry for Quilt Festival, and while Quilt Festival hasn’t officially been cancelled, I just can’t see how they are going to be able to have an event that draws thousands of people into small booths and classrooms. Maybe it will be ok by October and early November, but honestly I’m just not optimistic and therefore didn’t have much motivation to bend over backwards to meet their submission deadline.
+ Attempt to get some summer childcare plans in place. Working on it. I can’t do anything about Charlotte’s daycare — it will open when the space center changes their closure status, so we just have to wait and see. When they reopen, I do think we will send her back. Emma’s care reopened last week, but there’s no strong reason to send her back if Charlotte can’t also go somewhere. Perhaps by the end of the month they’ll be back in care? We’ll see.
Other May wins:
+ Jose’s birthday. We all worked hard to give him a really nice day and I think we succeeded.
+ 11th anniversary. We didn’t really do much, as we usually travel instead of exchanging gifts. But we had a nice day and looked at our wedding photos with the girls, and that was fun!
+ End of 2nd grade. It certainly wasn’t the school year we expected, but Emma wrapped things up with a virtual awards ceremony and a drive-by parade at the school. Emma LOVED 2nd grade and we loved her teacher. I’m sorry to have missed the last quarter, but excited for what will hopefully be a great and somewhat normal 3rd grade year.
+ 100 day project. My #100daysofsaroypostcards is still going strong and I’m having a lot of fun with it.
+ Survived another month of stay at home. The last time I was in my office was March 5. Emma’s last day at school was March 6. We got back from our spring break trip to Florida on March 14. No matter how you slice it, it’s now been nearly 3 full months of stay-at-home. We have a bit of a routine — take out on Wednesday evenings, afternoon Starbucks or Sonic runs a couple times per week, a grocery run every 9-10 days — but overall it has been home, home, home. The last couple weeks have felt particularly fuzzy to me, without any good sense of what day it is. But we are carrying on!
June goals:
+ Find and highlight black and minority quilters and creatives. The proliferation of black squares in my Instagram feed earlier this week was undeniable proof that I need more diversity in my online activity. I’m working to improve this and will share what I find.
+ Build my Etsy shop. I put a few patterns online about 6 months ago, but didn’t do much with it until now. With Bluprint closing, I’m working to add new patterns to my Etsy shop — and also make prints versions of a couple of them!
+ Write Mini Maze pattern. This will be featured next month by Quilters Candy!
+ Finish our taxes. Like, for real.
+ Move my body 4 times per week. After several great months, I’ve been making excuses and letting myself off the hook for the last couple weeks. Time to get moving again.
Ok June. Let’s see what you’ve got.

Email newsletters always seem easy, and I found they took hours! Good for you
Also, +1 for NASA worm, glad it’s making a comeback

Yeah, there was a lot of set-up that I didn’t expect. The newsletter writing itself was actually the easy part this time! I’m glad I’ve chosen to only do it monthly. I think more often would be too much work for me, and probably too much for the people on my list too.
