Cheryl of Muppin provided a whole list of prompts for this quilting/sewing-themed month of blogging, but since I’d planned to write about other things as well, I’ve only answered a couple. So — time for one giant lightning round of all 31 prompts!
Introduction: See here.
Sewing space: My sewing room is what most people would call a dining room. Works great!
Machine: I’ve had a Juki TL-2010Q for almost 4 years and love it. Highly recommend, except for the walking foot. For that, get the Janome foot, which fits the Juki.
Favorite tools: See here.
First project: When I finally started sewing for real in 2011? A pillowcase.
Oldest UFO: This t-shirt quilt.
Dream project: See here.
Skills I wish I had: Free motion quilting on my domestic machine. I’ve tried, but still haven’t really gotten into it.
Favorite tip: Glue basting!
Top 5 books: I just have one.
Most impactful class: This year, I loved “Central Pivot” with Kim Eichler-Messmer that I took at QuiltCon. Over the summer, I finished the quilt I started there.
Favorite color: blue!
Least favorite color: orange.
Show us your fabric: It’s in the 9 cubbies above. Plus a couple more bundles on a 10th shelf. It’s a pretty modest stash compared to many, but it’s plenty for me.
Earliest sewing memory: My mom making a costume for me in 10th grade. It was for my school’s Renaissance Feast.
Why do I sew? Because it’s fun, rewarding, and a great creative outlet.
Favorite “sewlebrity”: Dunno about this term, but here are some quilting/sewing biz people that I really admire for various and different reasons: Carolyn Friedlander, Tula Pink, Emily Dennis, Yvonne Fuchs, Andrea Tsang-Jackson, Abby Glassenberg. (Perhaps a longer post on this would be nice!)
“If I could sew with…” I really love sewing with my Gulf Coast Modern Quilt Guild crew!
On the design wall: I don’t have a design wall. And nothing in work at the moment that needs laying out either.
Proudest achievement: Learning how to design my own patterns. Providing high quality design and editing services to those who need them. My QuiltCon award.
Top 5 gift ideas: Anything from this list. Or a gift card to a fabric shop!
What I listen to/watch: podcasts! Some sewing-related, and some not. Two fairly long-lived faves are The Girl Next Door and Best of Both Worlds.
Prewash or not: No if I’m making a quilt. Yes if I’m making clothes.
State of my worktable: It’s been worse. There’s a bunch of non-sewing stuff at one end right now that needed to be temporarily relocated during the holiday week. That’s my to-be-finished Christmas quilt on the far end.
Show us your scraps: I recently divided them from one overflowing bin into these two drawers. The top drawer has warm colors, the bottom has cool.
Favorite sewing foot: Not sure I have a “favorite” — just the ones I use most often, a piecing foot and walking foot. Plus a stitch in the ditch foot for the final step of machine binding.
Techniques to try: Hand piecing.
Skill I want to improve: Domestic free motion quilting. I really want to overcome my perfectionism and get on with it.
Latest project: My Christmas quilt! (Didn’t finish by Christmas but close.)
My first 2020 project: Hanging sleeves for my QuiltCon acceptances.
2020 sewing goals: Working on a whole post about this!
p.s. I’m doing a 31 day blogging challenge.
