This week I officially finished my Trinket quilt! The top has been done since early May, when the sew-along hosted by Alison Glass wrapped up. You might remember that I taught a 3-part class at my local quilt shop centered on that sew-along! I taught the basics of paper piecing, and then helped the students with their blocks and figuring out a final quilt layout.
I arranged my blocks into a simple diamond shape, and love how bold they look against the navy blue background. I am 99% planner when it comes to quilting, so I had mocked up my layout and color choices ahead of time. It’s always fun to see my computer mockup come to life.
For the quilting, I decided to push myself beyond my usual of straight lines or easy walking foot curves. With inspiration from my favorite quilting book — Walk by Jacquie Gehring — I chose a diamond design for the background. I chose not to quilt diamonds over the blocks themselves, and instead simply stitched in the ditch around each one so the piecing stands out.
With a few deep breaths and a lot of marked dots, I dove into the quilting! Bobbie (Geeky Bobbin) had recommended Invisafil thread when I posted on Instagram wondering what would blend in well with all the different colored blocks. And even though I didn’t end up stitching over the blocks themselves, I stuck with her recommendation of both Invisafil and a light gold color.
After putting a lot of effort into the quilting — and burying a ton of threads! — I’m happy to report that I really LOVE the result. The contrasting thread stands out, but the Invisafil is so thin that the quilting stitches are visible but not overwhelming. I really LOVE the result.
The stats:
- Quilt measures 50″ x 60″. The blocks are each 4″ square, with 1/2″ sashing.
- Fabrics are all Kaleidoscope by Alison Glass. (These are shot cottons, so slightly different than a standard solid.)
- Backing (not pictured) is gray Widescreen fabric by Carolyn Friedlander.
- Machine quilted with a walking foot using Wonderfil Invisafil (#138 Light Gold) on the top and Aurifil 50 wt (#2600 Dove) in the bobbin.

Beautiful! And I love those three pairs of feet peeking out from beneath.

Thanks Gretchen!
The girls ran outside and said they wanted to help hold it too — Emma even said she wanted her feet to show. 🙂
