September is ending and all I have to say is WHERE IS OUR FIRST COLD FRONT?? I am so ready for some cooler temperatures.
September goals update:
+ Develop a weeknight/homework routine. We haven’t formalized this, but we have fallen into a routine that is working well for now. Emma is extremely conscientious about doing her homework, which certainly helps — she often sits down the minute she walks in the door to get it done. We’ve pulled back (but not eliminated) iPad time and there haven’t really been any complaints. So, win!
+ Eat more veggies. I did pretty well with this one — and to be clear, this one was very much about developing new habits for our grocery shopping and meal planning. I’ve made an effort to buy more bagged salads, steam-in-the-bag fresh veggies, and good snack veggies like tomatoes and peppers. If I can keep going, I know the habit will start to stick!
+ Set up some sort of calendar/command center by our back door. I had a ridiculously difficult time decided how to handle this. There are a lot of lovely customizable chalkboard and whiteboard options on Etsy and I came close to buying on several times, but sheesh they seem really overpriced for what they are. (I’m talking like $140 for a 24″ x 36″ board.) So I ordered a sleek, high quality $50 whiteboard on Amazon that arrived yesterday. I’ll customize it myself.
+ “No spend-ish” month. Honestly I didn’t specifically track this so it’s hard to say how well we did. I think it went ok, because I was definitely being more thoughtful before buying stuff?
+ Investigate alternate TV/internet options. I tried Fubo TV and it worked well — it did indeed give us access to the Astros games — but the picture quality wasn’t as good and I’m not sure why. I think it’s time to call AT&T and bargain with them. Ugh.
Other September wins:
+ Charlotte turned 4! And we had multiple celebrations.
+ Took a quilting workshop. I took a day off work to join an improv quilting workshop put on by my guild and really enjoyed it! Learning new skills from new people is always a good time.
+ Survived Tropical Storm Imelda. “Survived” is a strong word, but Imelda did impact the Houston area pretty severly, and the area east of us on the way to Beaumont even more. School was cancelled for 1.5 days too, even though we were fortunate that our part of town saw “only” 8-9 inches of rain instead of the 20-40″ that other communities had to deal with.
+ A good trip to Corpus Christi. We enjoyed a quick weekend and time with Jose’s side of the family.
+ A successful girls (aka solo parenting) weekend. We had plenty of fun including as Astros game. It was a good reminder to me that while the kids can still be challenging, things are much easier and more manageable than they used to be.
+ Got Halloween costumes. The girls were excited to get them extra early this year so after an adamant conversation about how if we got them now they are not allowed to change their minds (ha), I ordered them. Emma is going to be a ballerina (specifically, Felicie from Leap) and Charlotte is going to be Butterbean (from the Nick Jr show Butterbean’s Cafe).
+ Finished my Trinket quilt. Post coming soon!
