After a 2-year hiatus, I’m bringing back monthly goal-setting! I’m going to stick with quarterly goals for all of my quilting projects, but I’m ready to get back to planning other areas of life too. I’m also going to start adding big things that I know will be happening each month (inspired by how Kelsey does this with her goals).
May feels like one giant transitional month as school wraps up, we hit a couple family milestones, and we careen into summer. I finalized Emma’s summer camp schedule earlier this week and fingers crossed it goes well. Last year as a rising 1st grader, she was able to return to our daycare. This summer as a rising 2nd grader, that’s no longer an option.
I went on a reading binge for a few weeks in March and April after going quite a while without having a book in progress. What I read was silly (a young adult series and the 2nd and 3rd books in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy) but I’ve realized that it doesn’t really matter as long as I find it entertaining. I’m hoping to keep some momentum and find some good summer reads to enjoy.
I’d also like to find one good TV show to watch on a weekly basis. I don’t watch much TV at all anymore, but Jose and I have been watching the final season of Game of Thrones and loving it. Part of it is the show, but part of it is just having a dedicated “TV date” for 6 weeks in a row. (Only 3 episodes left!) It’d be nice to start on another show once GoT ends.
May also represents the unofficial beginning of summer to me — mainly because it’s usually when the hot weather returns. We had a really lovely April but this week has marked the return of humidity. (I’m not ready.) The good news is that the neighborhood pool will be opening this month! We went to the pool nearly every weekend last summer and it was something that really helped make the summer feel happy for me. I’m definitely looking forward to that again.
Big things happening in May:
- A visit from my mom. After she had to forego a visit in February due to illness, we rescheduled for this month. She arrives on Saturday!
- Kid-free getaway to New Orleans. While Mom is here, Jose and I are escaping for a couple nights. He’s been wanting us to go to New Orleans together since he went with his friend last year, so it should be a nice time and hopefully we have decent weather.
- Mother’s Day. My mom will still be here so it’ll be twice as special this year. I’m thinking of going to the Astros game that day. We haven’t bought tickets yet but there are probably still some available.
- Jose’s birthday. Only one more year of saying he’s “in my 30s.”
- 10th wedding anniversary. Wow! 10 years already! The New Orleans getaway is the main way we’re celebrating, but hopefully we’ll be able to schedule a babysitter for a nice dinner out too.
- Emma finishes 1st grade. There are already several year-end activities on the schedule to celebrate. (Also it’s still weird to me that school gets out in May here.)
May goals:
- Prep for Disney. We leave in a month and y’all, it’s getting real. I’m half excited, and half wondering what we’ve gotten ourselves into. We have relied on the Disney planner to do 95% of the heavy lifting and that has been awesome, but now my brain is turning to all the “what ifs.” What if it’s too hot? What if I don’t pack the right clothes? What if we don’t make it to everything we’ve planned? What if everyone is just hungry and tired instead of having fun? I may need to tattoo “chill out Sarah” on my arm. (Also, we still haven’t told the girls we’re going! I wonder when we should??)
- Clean out the kids’ clothes. I have been putting this off for months but it’s getting ridiculous. Charlotte came downstairs last week wearing a shirt that *just barely* covered her belly. And Emma can’t even wear half the things in her dresser anymore because they’re too short or small.
- Goodwill trip. I have 2 rather large boxes of no-longer-needed items that have been sitting around for weeks. It’s definitely time to get them out of the house, and there’s really no excuse since Goodwill is literally a 3-minute drive from home.
- Get back to Orange Theory. My problematic gums should be good enough that I can start working out in earnest again, and as part of that I am ready to get back to Orange Theory at least once a week, and hopefully twice a week if I can figure out another good regular time slot. (Post-gum surgery instructions were to avoid raising my heart rate for a week, and the minor complication I had extended that.)
Happy May, everyone!

Disney? Is Star Wars Land open already?
Sarah says
Don’t know about Star Wars land…but that wouldn’t be a draw for our kids, sorry to say. 😉

It doesn’t open until August. You are good there 🙂 We go to Disney World every year around that time. It’s hot but not crazy hot like July and August. Plan lots of pool time during the middle of the day. Go to parks early in the morning and at night. (that is if you are going to Disney World not Disney Land)
Sarah says
Oh cool! Yes, we are doing Disney World. What you mentioned — parks in the morning/lunchtime and at night with pool/resort time in the afternoon is our tentative plan.

Glad I’m not the only one who gets behind on dealing with the kids’ clothes. Jonathan gets them dressed in the morning which really exacerbates the problem. He doesn’t notice clothing issues the way I do.
Sarah says
Our girls have gotten into the habit of picking their own clothes and often even getting themselves dressed in the morning. Which is AWESOME. (Emma helps Charlotte.) But they of course will just put stuff they don’t like or that doesn’t fit back in the drawer, so it just piles up.
