On Monday afternoon as I was watching the Astros win Game 3 of the ALDS — which sends them on to the ALCS, woohoo! — I found myself looking at the team’s current logo and thinking “hmm, I bet I could paper piece that into a quilt block.”
And then yesterday when I posted a photo of my new rally towel — obtained when Jose and I bought last-minute tickets to Game 1 last Friday — adorning my cube at work, Machelle said “We need to find a paper pieced star logo with the H in the middle.”
Well, great minds think alike, do they not? So after some furious work last night, here it is! A paper-pieced quilt block of the Astros logo! Just in time for all your ALCS (and hopefully World Series) quilty needs.

It makes a 15″ square block. You need white, dark blue, and two shades of orange — I used Kona White, Nightfall, and two other oranges that I’m guessing are Mango and Tangerine (or something close).
Disclaimers: I didn’t include paper piecing instructions and the PDF file only contains the templates, so you need to know what you’re doing to make this work. If you need a paper piecing tutorial, Alyce of Blossom Heart Quilts has a good one, or here’s one from Angela Walters and Bluprint. (Also, I mayyy be teaching a paper piecing class locally at Sparkly Elephant Sewing in the next few months.)

Above are both an in-progress photo and the finished product!
Go Astros!
You were quick on the uptake! I think it looks awesome and I look forward to seeing the finished block.
