Yesterday was Emma’s 6th birthday, and even though it was a weekday, we did our best to celebrate in style. After saying goodbye to my parents (who were headed back to North Carolina after a fun week with us in Houston), we stopped at Dunkin Donuts for breakfast before heading to work and daycare. We also brought cupcakes for Emma to share with her class as part of afternoon snack. Then, Jose picked her up early and took her to Dave & Buster’s as a surprise, where they had a blast playing games. I picked Charlotte up a bit later and we met them there, and then we all went to Red Robin for dinner and a birthday girl sundae. From there it was home to open a few more presents. Whew! It was quite the day for our new 6-year-old!
(I’ve posted “Dear Emma” letters on her birthday in previous years, but I decided that 5-years-old — which I posted last year — was a good place to end that, or at least end my public posting of them. She’s in elementary school now, and that has felt a lot like the end of her “little” kid years. Can’t believe we are headed to 1st grade in only two weeks!!)

I mentioned that my mom and dad were here, and it was great to have a visit from them. They arrived last Sunday afternoon so they were here for a good solid week. We had a lot of fun hanging out and eating out, and then had a fun weekend full of Emma’s birthday party and time at the pool. I got to join Mom for four nice walks around the neighborhood. Jose and I took two days off work and enjoyed a “staycation” in the Museum District and Montrose. All in all it was a lovely week.

I didn’t do much sewing with my parents in town and all the other activities we had going on last week, but I did finish a couple projects the week before that. I made a dress for Emma using some Incredibles fabric she picked out from Joann’s. It’s the same pattern — the First Day Dress by Dana of Made Everyday — that I used last year to make her Trolls dress, and it turned out super cute. She wore it to her birthday party on Saturday!
I also whipped up two super simple elastic waist skirts for the girls the day before we went to an Astros game! I had bought the Astros fabric on the same shopping trip that I got the fabric for Emma’s dress and planned to turn it into pajama pants for Jose, but I was guessing at how much I needed. I got 2 yards…and that, as it turned out, wasn’t enough. (As a future reference for myself, the pajama pants pattern I have requires at least 2.5 yards!)
I need to get back to sewing this week, since I do have a few quilting-related deadlines coming up before the end of the month.
