You guys! There are less than 2 weeks left in the 100 day project! I’m so excited to finish up my scrappy rainbow.
What else? I’ve been able to make progress on several lingering WIPs over the last couple weeks. I finished my two tops, made some charity blocks, finally sewed my barn quilt blocks from last year into a top (see above — I love it!), and finished quilting a spacey baby quilt (just needs binding now).
Because the 100 Day Project has been so fun, and because I’m crazy, I’ve decided to jump right into another 100 day project — the #100days100blocks2018 sew-along hosted by Angie from GnomeAngel. The goal is to make Tula Pink’s City Sampler quilt by making 1 block each day until we’re done. This will be the third sew-along of hers that I’ve joined (the first was Long Time Gone and the second was Gypsy Wife), so clearly I’m a sucker for these things, but I’ve also fallen in love with the way these things let me break epic quilts up into manageable bites.
The vast majority of City Sampler quilts that I’ve seen use scraps or rainbows or whole fabric lines, but I’m going to try something pretty different and do the whole thing in blue and white solids. No prints. No other colors. That’s my fabric pull above — white plus 7 different shades of blue. I think I’ll use white primarily for the sashing at the end, so I’ll really be focused on the 7 blues. I haven’t seen a version done quite like this so I hope it’ll turn out ok, but I did come across several monochromatic versions that were all fantastic.
- Purple & white version by Andrea
- Yellow & grayscale by Karen Martin
- Orange, white & gray by Alison Gamm
- Blue, gray & white by Alyce Blyth
- All solids by KatyQuilts (but not monochromatic)
I’ve already started planning for this, and my fabric arrived a couple days ago. I do plan to approach this project a bit different than the 100 day project. For the 100 day project, I really have been sewing a block each day, with only one or two exceptions. But for the City Sampler, I plan to sew ahead of schedule by a few days. These blocks are more complicated than the improv blocks I’ve been doing, and I will probably fall behind schedule if I don’t work on them in multi-block chunks. I’ll still post just one each day on Instagram, which is fine according to the “terms” of the sew-along, and I’ll still finish with all 100 blocks at the end of 100 days.
Summer sewing! Onward!
I really look forward to seeing how your Tula 100Blocks come together. I definitely love the color palette you chose!
Your barn quilt looks fantastic! I’ve been keeping that in the back of my mind as a future project. When I was browsing at a quilt store recently I wondered what your quilt blocks would look like done in greyscale. It would definitely not be as fun and joyful as your colorful design, but I’m into grey right now. Seeing all those City Sampler monochromatics make me wonder even more. To be continued!
Oh, I think the barn quilt blocks done in grayscale could be really cool though! Sure, not as colorful by definition but there is always a time/place for grayscale quilts too. If you try it, definitely let me know!!
