So far, the biggest thing I can say about May is that it appears to be birthday season for my kids! Emma went to one party last weekend, and between the two girls we got invited to THREE parties tomorrow. One is for Charlotte’s friends (twins from her class) and it’s in the morning, but the others were for Emma’s friends and are literally on top of each other so we had to choose. Next weekend is Mother’s Day, but then we’ve got at least two more parties (one for each kid) before the month is over. Oh, and Jose’s birthday is in there along with our 9th wedding anniversary, not to mention Memorial Day and the end of the school year. Whew!

Today my friend Liz and I are going to a local quilt show put on by the Lakeview Quilters Guild. I’ve known about this guild for a few years — they meet in my area — but have never been to their meeting. Rather counterintuitively, I’m actually MORE motivated to go to one of their meetings now that I’ve found the new Gulf Coast Modern Quilt Guild. I’m looking forward to seeing what a small, local show is like since I’ve only ever been to the International Quilt Festival and QuiltCon! The theme of the Lakeview show this year is “Celebrating Sue” so it will feature a lot of Sue Garman’s quilts; she was a member of the Lakeview guild. (Her work was featured at Quilt Festival last fall as well.)

We had a really fun time at the Astros game last weekend. To be honest I wasn’t sure how it would go since neither kid has anywhere close to the attention span needed to sit and watch an entire baseball game. But the innings moved quickly, and we had snacks and things to watch and talk about, and it worked great! There was one unexpected hiccup though — it seems Charlotte is either afraid of heights, or just was overwhelmed by all the noise and activity? (I’m guessing the latter.) She clung to me for several innings, and then clung to Jose for a couple more before he finally got her feeling a little more comfortable…or at least happy enough to turn around and face the field rather than burrowing her head into our chests. We made it to the end of the 7th in our seats, then headed out to find ice cream and search for the kids area — which became the biggest disappointment of the day when we learned that the kids area has been replaced by a team store. Really, Astros? There’s already at least 3 other team stores in the stadium! Sigh. But the Astros won and all’s well that ends well.

This week I got up to run before work for the first time in several months. I fell out of the habit in December due to cold weather and busy schedules, and then was doing the Orange Theory challenge for the first few months of this year. Now that I’m settling into a good routine of going to OTF twice a week, I want to work running back into my schedule since the 1.5-2 miles I rack up at an OTF class aren’t really enough. It should be pretty doable for me to get back to running before work twice a week, which means some sort of workout four times a week.
I’m also forcing myself to slow wayyy down on these two runs. OTF is so high intensity that I feel like my other two workouts need to be a lot more low key, where I my heart rate more in the “green” zone than going all out.

Teacher Appreciation Week starts on Monday and I have a bunch of stuff to put together this weekend for that. It got more complicated this year since our kids are now at two different schools! I’m the room captain for Charlotte’s class and was able to get a lot of volunteers to cover various snacks and treats, but I still have to put together the “big” class gift and I’ve got to come up with something for Emma’s teacher as well. I’ll buy gift cards, but always like to add a little something extra. We’ll see what I come up with!

I continue to be amazed at how much fitness I can get from running slowly. But I’m a little amused that you found it to be too cold to run in Houston this winter. 🙂

I know, I know — it wasn’t JUST because of the cold…but with everything else going on, and lack of sleep, and knowing it’d be “cold”… Also I’ve lost all cold tolerance after living here so long.
Ok, done with my excuses. Now we’re getting to the time of year when it will be too hot! Ha.
