It’s been quite a busy spring so far (and yes, to me “spring” basically starts on March 1) with no sign of slowing down in the next couple weeks. We went to San Antonio, all of 200 miles away, and only for 3 days, but when we came back, suddenly everything seemed super green and flowery. There is a large tree in our neighbor’s backyard that rises up behind our garage, and I often stare at it from our breakfast table. Last spring, and again this year, it has turned the most brilliant shade of green — lime green, practically neon. (I did not enhance the photo above at all.) It’s my favorite tree on the whole block, just because of its color.
My birthday’s coming up, then Easter, and Jose’s going out of town for a few days for work, and next thing you know the school year will be over. I realized the other day that Emma is only a couple months away from being entirely done with kindergarten and that seemed crazy to me!

Emma has started writing more, and this week she started posting signs for various things around the house. On this particular day, I was greeted with signs at BOTH doorways into my sewing room saying “no people allowed.”

I ran a “quarter marathon” last weekend — one of the multiple races that make up the 3-day Seabrook Lucky Trails event. I’ve done several of the other Lucky Trails races over the years, from the half marathon to the marathon relay to back-to-back half marathons, but I think this may have been the first time I’ve done the quarter marathon option. (I feel like maybe it’s a new option for their event? Not sure.)
I’ve been doing Orange Theory a ton, but not running much outside of that, so I knew 6.5 miles was pushing it. And it was — I was ready to be done by about mile 4. But it was a fun event, and nice to be back out there. My neighbor Louisa and I went together and met up with my friend Laura there, and even though we didn’t run together since all three of us are totally different paces, it was also fun to be there with friends. (And Laura took first in her age group! Woo!)
I finished in 1:17:32. I didn’t have a goal at all, but when I looked at my phone with about a half mile to go and saw that I was at 11:59 pace, I decided to finish under 12:00 pace and hoofed it in from there. Another funny story — I spent most of the race thinking it was a 10K. It wasn’t until I passed the 6 mile marker, knowing that the finish line was definitely more than 0.2 miles away, that I realized “oh yeah, this is a quarter marathon!” And at the end of a race, that “extra” 0.3 miles felt like a lot! Ha.

Earlier this week I bought myself an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil! It’s something I’ve wanted for a while, entirely because of the pencil and how easy it is to use with various drawing apps, but couldn’t really justify the cost. But after my QuiltCon award and the sale of that quilt, I decided to put my winnings towards something fun for myself — and call it an early birthday present too.
Ironically, I haven’t had much time to play with it since I was scrambling to finish up a quilt that needed to be mailed no later than yesterday. But I met that deadline (whew!) and am ready to do some serious iPad doodling this weekend!
