Welcome to the October installment of my Barn Quilt Block of the Month project! This is a personal challenge I decided to give myself in 2017 to keep pushing my pattern-making skills and add to my overall quilting abilities. Each month I’ll pick a cool barn quilt, turn it into an actual block, write up a pattern, and list it in my Craftsy shop.
There’s nothing like a good star block, amiright? I came across the Northumberland Star in several places and couldn’t let the year end without putting one together for myself. With some clever color choice, the double star design can take on a ton of unique looks!
Get the Northumberland Star Block pattern here!
This block is paper pieced, the pattern has templates for a 12″ block, and it’s only $2! I don’t include paper piecing instructions in the pattern, but there are plenty of great resources online to help you. One of my favorites is the paper piecing tutorial at Blossom Heart Quilts.
One more to go!

I like how different a typical Sawtooth star can look on point, and making this have double the “points” is really fun. I’m really excited to see all your blocks together soon!

What are you going to do with the 12 blocks at the end of the year? Make a quilt out of them?
Sarah says
Definitely, I’ll put them together to make a quilt. With only 12 blocks it’ll be kind of small…maybe I need to make 12 more? 🙂
