Welcome to the June installment of my Barn Quilt Block of the Month project! This is a personal challenge I decided to give myself in 2017 to keep pushing my pattern-making skills and add to my overall quilting abilities. Each month I’ll pick a cool barn quilt, turn it into an actual block, write up a pattern, and list it in my Craftsy shop.
This month’s block is the Welcome Home Star, featured on a barn in Shawano County, Wisconsin. From the description that goes along with this barn quilt, it sounds like the “Welcome Home” name was chosen by the barn owners in honor of their kids and grandkids who enjoy coming home, and I love that sentiment! What a fun thing to be able to spot a big ol’ barn quilt as a marker that you’ve arrived. I like how the different radiating points give the impression of individual stars being layered on top of each other, and the central portion works really well in three different shades of the same color like I’ve done here.

This block is paper pieced, the pattern has templates for a 12″ block, and it’s only $2! I don’t include paper piecing instructions in the pattern, but there are plenty of great resources online to help you. One of my favorites is the paper piecing tutorial at Blossom Heart Quilts.
I’m excited to be exactly halfway though my year-long barn quilt sampler. Six more to go!

What a great name and story to go with it. The block is cheerful and fun, I am definitely looking forward to seeing how all your blocks come together at the end of the year.

Me too! And since I haven’t decided what my final 6 blocks will be, the final look is still a surprise — even to me!
