This year I finished 5 mini quilts, 4 simple baby quilts, and 3 larger quilts — including my largest quilt to date, a twin size. (I got halfway through a 4th one too.) I published 1 free quilt pattern, made a quilted tote bag, sewed a shirt, and cross stitched ~85% of a Christmas stocking. I took a class with Carolyn Friedlander and also made my now-traditional trip downtown for Quilt Festival.
It’s fun to see everything listed out like that and realize that wow, I got more done than I might have initially thought!
Some highlights:
I made 4 baby quilts this year using the same simple method of pieced top, no batting, minimal quilting, and a minky backing folded around the front using a self-binding technique. It’s a close call, but I think my favorite of the four was the Dogwood Star quilt I made for my coworker’s new baby. I designed my own oversized block based on a barn quilt design, figured out how to do extra large paper piecing, and loved the result.
My Ten Square quilt is officially the largest I’ve ever made at ~65″ x 95″ so that was definitely a milestone. It was also one of the only times I’ve made a quilt that actually stayed in my own house! I love seeing it every day on Emma’s bed and she really likes it too. I’ve noticed a couple of spots on the quilting where the thread has broken — not really sure what would have caused that! — so I need to make a few minor repairs at some point.
My favorite mini quilt I made this year was this paper pieced geometric sewing machine that I did for a swap — and it got lost/stolen in the mail!! I was soooo disappointed. It’s the first time this has happened to me and hopefully the last. I guess I can be thankful it was “only” a mini quilt that was lost instead of something larger, but it still sucked. I hope someone is enjoying this wherever it is…
In the “sewing for myself” department, I’m really proud of the Sailor Top I made for myself. It was pretty easy to make and turned out totally wearable! The only downside was that quilting cotton is really wrinkly — I should have realized this, of course, but I didn’t think about it. I’ve worn this top several times but honestly, I’d wear it a lot more if it didn’t need to be ironed. Someday I’d like to make another one in a different fabric. Nonetheless — this was a win in my book!
I’ll be back next week with some thoughts and goals for my sewing in 2017!

Your quilts are great! Love the designs and colors you used in them all!
So sad about the mini, it is adorable!! It’s just too bad when things like this happen. You almost hope that it just got lost somewhere instead of thinking someone else would have taken it.. =(
Either way, yes, it does suck!

Thanks Amy! The mini was just an unfortunate casualty of a larger mail theft on the recipient’s end — definitely a bummer.

That’s more than one make a month! How awesome! I look forward to seeing what you create in 2017. Happy New Year!

Thanks Yvonne! I hadn’t even thought about the pace, but more than one per month isn’t too shabby at all!
