Sewing // For the first time in 2 months! I packed up my sewing machine a couple weeks before we moved and didn’t unpack it until we’d been in our new house for a couple weeks. Still, that only accounts for the first month — the rest was just due to general lethargy I’ve been feeling lately combined with the silly notion that my new sewing room needed to be 100% set up before I could actually work on anything. It’s close, but on Wednesday night I decided it was time to just get on with it. I started working on a mini quilt for the Quiet Play Swap. Those are antlers in the picture above, and I’m excited to see the rest of the reindeer appear as I keep going.
Running // In the morning! And even though it’s only been a week, I’m really enjoying it so far. On Tuesday and again yesterday, I got up at 6:00, ran for ~45 minutes, and got home around 7:00. It worked out really well! I like how calm and quiet it is. I like watching the sky gradually lighten as I plod along. (And for now, it truly is plodding as I essentially start from scratch.) I like coming back home to find Jose and Emma snuggling in bed and Charlotte just starting to stir. I like being able to go through the rest of my day knowing that I’ve already gotten in my exercise. I’ve never really been a morning runner…but my life and routine is different now than it has been. I’m feeling optimistic that this could be a long-term thing.
Tracking // My time in 15-minute increments using this spreadsheet from Laura Vanderkam after recently starting to follow her blog. I haven’t read her books, but I still decided I’d give her suggestions a try and track my time in 15-minute increments for a week. I started on Wednesday so it’s day 3. So far I haven’t noticed any major revelations but I’m curious to see what the weekend will show.
Waiting // For a Smith & Noble consultant to visit us this afternoon. We need some sort of window treatment for the 4 large windows in our new breakfast room that are currently bare. I love this during the day because it lets a ton of light in, but it also feels very exposed at night. I’m not convinced that blinds are the way to go — maybe some sort of shade? The Happier podcast has been hawking Smith & Noble for months so I thought “what the heck” and scheduled an appointment. I’m excited to see how it goes!
So I really like shear shading — the are basically horizontal blinds between sheer fabric. I like the light filtering effect when they are down, the ability to close them completely like regular blinds, or raise them. I just think they are perfectly all purpose. They are ridiculously expensive though.
Here’s an example of my faves. https://www.hunterdouglas.com/sheers
But I priced them for the three back windows in my house and it was going to be like $1500, so no.
For what it’s worth, I’ve found once you decide what you want you can usually find that exact style in a variety of brands at a pretty good discount at an online retailer. It’s maybe a little bit sucky to have someone come out, measure, and show you samples only to have you buy online. But with the crazy price of window treatments…
Hope your morning exercise continues! It is WONDERFUL to go through the rest of the day satisfied and happy about exercise
I have been loving morning running as well. I haven’t been a morning runner for more than a decade, and it’s great to get back into it. I like that our interest in running is coinciding.
