America loves women like Hillary Clinton — as long as they’re not asking for a promotion | Quartz
How can we reconcile the “unlikable” Democratic presidential candidate of today with the adored politician of recent history? […] The wild difference between the way we talk about Clinton when she campaigns and the way we talk about her when she’s in office can’t be explained as ordinary political mud-slinging. Rather, the predictable swings of public opinion reveal Americans’ continued prejudice against women caught in the act of asking for power.
I don’t agree with every single thing in this article…but I agree with a lot.
5 weak words you should avoid & what to use instead | Crew
This was really interesting! I’m definitely guilty of 3 of these 5 things, and when I notice myself doing them — especially in a professional context like work emails, presentations or meeting — I try to edit accordingly. I also wonder if women are more likely to make some of these mistakes (like using “really” or saying “I believe”) than men?
One Child / One Parent Trips | Everday Reading
I LOVE the idea of taking one-on-one trips with your children individually and definitely something to keep in mind for when the girls are older.
I happened to see this on Conan last night and think that 1) their jet suits are SO freaking cool and 2) these guys are SO freaking crazy. I have so many questions about how this works that I need to go look up now. How do they control the jetsuit? How do they stay stable amidst the wing vortices (and wake in general) produced by the A380? Where is the fuel stored? How long can they stay airborne? How do they land? And, since it happened in October, how did I not come across this until now??
So law school has really helped me with a lot of writing bad habits. For me, the use of the word “since” is a real problem. And I now edit sentence by sentence for passive voice. But I still have a sentence length issue. Have you played with ms Word’s readability statistics? You can turn it on following spell check – looks for how many syllables in words, length of sentences, passive voice, etc to score the ease of what you are writing. It’s not perfect but it definitely encourages more judicious editing.
As for words women use “sorry” and “it’s just my opinion” (thus minimizing your opinion) are definitely two big no-no’s.
I regularly have to edit my emails for things like “sorry” and “my opinion” and even the “I think” or “I believe” that are mentioned in this article. Haven’t played with that feature in Word but now I want to!
Good article and comments. I also edit my emails all the time to remove “sorry” and “I think.”
I have a question though. I’ve recently started removing “Thanks” from most of my emails because it became a default closing line and was losing any real meaning. I feel torn because I want to tell people I appreciate their help, but I realized that very few people (and especially men) ever say thanks in their emails at my work. Do you use “Thank you” in work emails?
Loved these articles! I’m a big fan of the one-on-one time! I took Lily to an out-of-town swim meet and we ended up staying overnight in a hotel and having “Mommy/Lily time”. It was so much fun that I’ll be doing it with Violet next month. I’m taking her to Sea World in San Antonio! It was just nice to have that special one-on-one time and Lily and I had a lot of really great conversations during that time too.
