Cutting // Fabric for a twin-size quilt for Emma! I’m really excited to be starting on this one at last. She picked out the patterned fabric several weeks ago and I ordered a bunch of coordinating solids. I’m using Anna Graham’s Ten Square tutorial.
The print is Jules & Coco Quatrefoil Multi from Joann’s. I’m picky about what I buy from Joann’s these days, but this one looked and felt nice, and I had really wanted to let Emma pick a fabric for her quilt. The solids are Kona cotton in candy pink, pistachio, aqua, storm, cornflower, wasabi and white from fabric.com. (What looks like black in the photo is actually dark navy blue.)
Thinking // About exchanging our new Tempurpedic mattress for a traditional one. We’ve been sleeping on it for almost a month now and while both Jose and I hoped it would be amazing, to be honest we are both pretty indifferent. It’s the first time I’ve slept on a memory foam mattress and while I don’t hate it, I also don’t love it. And if that’s the case, we both feel like maybe we should return/exchange it and get some of our money back. (The traditional mattress options were SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the Tempurpedic.)
Feeling // Relieved that Charlotte is finally on the mend after several days at home with her first true illness. It was just a cold and she didn’t have a fever, but she was pretty pitiful and fussy all the same. (She had the cold before we went for her 6-month checkup on Monday, but it definitely ramped up after visiting the pediatrician. I think that’s probably just coincidence, but who knows for sure.)
Making // Many small changes around the house as part of my March monthly goal to tackle the “house updates” list I made in February. I’ve already done more than 5 things and it feels so good to fix some of the little things that have bugged me for years!
Remembering // All these things from this week in my archives:
A year ago…I was highlighted by Women@NASA and wrote about why I’d be a bad professional quilter.
Two years ago…Emma went to her first rodeo and I made a cool North Carolina-themed embroidery.
Four years ago…I finished my first quilt!!
Five years ago…space shuttle Discovery landed for the final time.
Seven years ago…Jose and I checked in on the empty lot that would become our future home.
Eight years ago… Jose flew us to Brenham for a milkshake.
Nine years ago…I did a practice 1/4 ironman triathlon as training for my half ironman.
Ten years ago…I went to JPL to observe the Mars Reconaissance Orbiter’s arrival at Mars.
Eleven years ago…I was skiing at Whistler.
Twelve years ago…five friends and I ran a 10K dressed as aliens and scientists.
Fourteen years ago…I randomly got a tour of Apple, JUST after the iPod had been released.
Fifteen years ago…my blog from those days isn’t online anymore, but in March 2001 I was almost certainly stressing out about where to go to grad school.
(Also, this may become a semi-regular feature around here, because MAN was it fun to skim back through all those years of my ol’ blog!)
What size mattress do you guys have?
We are kind of in the market for a new mattress, though it’s not at the top of the priority list. Jonathan likes a firm one, and I like soft, so I’m not sure how we’re going to handle that.
We have a king. Jose and I had to compromise too. My favorites (in the store at least) were the hybrid mattresses with coils on the bottom but foam on top. He didn’t like those though.
I haven’t commented in a long time, but still read you regularly. I enjoy all your posts, and am so amazed at your quilting talent. You have such an eye for color, and your engineering skills are put to such creative use!
