Summary
November total – 35.4 miles
I had fully intended to do my long run last Sunday, but the whole day was rainy and just icky outside so I went with Plan B — doing it on Tuesday morning before I flew to Huntsville that afternoon. That turned out to be an awesome change of plans, because Tuesday morning was sunny and cold. The temperature was still in the low 40s at 10:00 when I headed out. I was dressed in capris and a long sleeve tech tee, which was enough since it was sunny even though it was pretty chilly when the wind blew. If it has been cloudy, I think I would have been cold. Every winter I always have a couple runs where I either wear too little or too much before I remember which combinations work for which conditions.
And yeah. 9.3 miles! I listened to 2 podcasts as I plodded along and the whole thing was actually somewhat enjoyable…except for my hip. I’ve noticed an ache in my left hip for a few weeks now. Until this week it had always appeared after my run and wasn’t really bothersome, but on Tuesday I started feeling it around the first mile. It progressively grew more sore until around 4 miles, at which point it hurt enough that I started wondering if I was going to have to cut my run short. Since I was ~1.5 miles from the house at that point, I decided to just push through and see how it felt when I got close to home. After that the ache began to dull a bit and I was able to finish the run without issue, although it never fully went away. In fact, it hurt pretty significantly for the rest of the day. It continued to hurt on Thursday and Friday, although less so. Even today, I can feel it twinge when I stand up or sit down.
The pain seems like it’s right on top of my hip bone — towards the front, not the side or back, and not as far down as the crease between my pelvis and thigh. Dr. Google tells me it’s probably either bursitis or tendonitis so for now, I’m just going to stretch better and hope it doesn’t get any worse. I’m going to try a shorter run today and see how that goes, and put off another long run until next weekend.
You ramped up to some rather long runs rather quickly. As we get older, that kind of thing is more likely to lead to injury.
True, however, I didn’t actually ramp up crazy quickly, and thought I was being pretty prudent about it. I did 6ish miles for a few weeks, then 7, 8, and now 9. My next long run was already going to be 6-7 miles as a “cut back” week. We’ll see.
