Last weekend we had a bunch of unexpected visitors! First, Jose’s best friend from college had been in Austin for the week for work, and he decided at the last minute to come over to Houston for a short 24 hour visit before his flight home. (He lives in New York and never gets to drive anywhere, so apparently the drive was actually fun for him!)
Then on Sunday, Jose’s cousin and her family stopped by for a few hours to visit and let the kids burn off some energy. They were on their way back to Corpus Christi from a vacation in Florida, and we were happy to see them. It was a fun weekend with all of our visitors!

In crafty news, I am going to be a pattern tester for the first time in the coming weeks! One of my favorite quilting bloggers mentioned on Instagram several weeks ago that she was looking for some new pattern testers for several quilt patterns she has coming out later this summer, so I emailed her and she added me to her list. I think it will be a lot of fun, and I’m excited! I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post photos of it as I work, but hopefully I’ll be able to blog about it at some point.

In other bloggy news, this week I finished a guest post for another blog I follow about being a working mom…and a lot of associated thoughts. (It’ll be one of a series of guests posts she started a few months ago.) It won’t be posted until late August, but I’ll mention it here when it goes up in case folks are interested.

Question for the masses: what nail polish colors are appropriate for work? I have been getting more daring with my color choices than I ever expected, and last time I chose a teal blue because 1) it seemed summery and 2) I’m going on vacation next week.
But then I ended up in a bunch of meetings with some fairly senior managers and got worried that my nail color was, at best, unprofessional or at worst, inappropriate. What say you, blog readers?

On a more serious work note, I had my yearly performance review earlier this week. It went totally fine, and my management is very happy with my work, but as usual it got my brain spinning about my job and career and goals in that department. If you liked hearing my “on having a job” musings last year, you can probably look forward to another installment in the near future.

I’ve been loving the World Cup and am looking forward to many more good games in the coming weeks. The US won their first game in the “group of death!” Mexico battled Brazil to a draw thanks to the heroics of their goalie! The defending champs (Spain) are already eliminated after two unexpected losses! Excitement!

I signed up for another cross stitch sampler several weeks ago, and it starts today! By October, I’ll have a cute Mysterious Halloween Town piece to show off. Let the stitching begin….er, well, to be more accurate, let the stitching continue!

That color is totally acceptable. I think where you would fall into the gray area would be overly bejewled or decorated. One of my fav colors is to wear black black black, especially in winter, and again, totally fine imho.
I agree – I think teal is ok. Actually I saw a middle aged woman wearing yellow the other day that looked surprisingly nice and I would never have thought of that for work. I have seen a few of our younger employees sporting the new (weird) fad of painting your ring finger a different color, which is definitely jarring. Or maybe it isn’t our guys but the SpaceX guys. Anyway. On a related note, law school has gotten me reading corprette.com, not as necessary for engineering dress work advice, but its so important in law, I decided it was valuable for me to study up.

I think the teal nail polish; I’m not sure I’d where it to my office. I personally wouldn’t think worse of someone for wearing it, but I’d be concerned that others might.
I don’t think I would wear a color that bright but I know I’m probably conservative on stuff like that. I usually don’t paint my finger nails at all because I worry about it. I think it’s because I work with mostly (older) men so if anything I try to be less bright and more neutral. I have definitely seen other professional women wearing bright nail colors in summer in particular though so I think it’s just up to you whether or not you feel comfortable wearing it.
I have had the same thoughts go through my head for sure… When the Seahawks were in the Super Bowl last winter I painted my nails alternating (bright) green and blue. Then had a somewhat unexpected meeting with higher-ups and a consultant that week and was worried about the same thing! In the end I figured they’d be ok since everyone was so excited about them
That color looks great! Isn’t nail polish just another accessory? So wear it like you would a bracelet, earrings, etc.
I really like the teal color, but I can see why you would question it as it is not exactly the most ‘traditional’ of colors. However, I still think it is completely acceptable, and so long as you maintain your nails well (ie avoid the awkward chipped nail look), it should be very work appropriate!
