Jose and I fell off our movie night bandwagon for several months, but we’re trying to pick back up again. Here are a few we’ve watched lately:
Frozen
4/5
There was SO much hype about this one and when I finally saw it, I have to admit that it didn’t quite meet my (sky high) expectations. Still, I liked it a lot and it was cool to see a Disney movie where the girls are the heroes.
The King’s Speech
5/5
This was in our DVD queue only because it won Best Picture, and although I like all the actors, it didn’t seem like an appealing storyline. But I was totally wrong! This was a fantastic movie. I loved it and if you haven’t seen it yet, you should definitely watch it too.
The Book Thief
3/5
I liked this one more than Jose did, probably because I had read the book and liked that. He didn’t like the ending at all (which I won’t detail here in case you want to watch the movie or read the book yourself). The life of a German girl whose family is hiding a Jew during World War II — well, it’s tough material from the start, and movies never contain all the nuances of a book.
Between holidays and the treadmill, here’s a quick rundown of other movies I’ve seen in the past 8 months and how I’d rate them:
- Hunger Games: Catching Fire (4/5) Saw it in Corpus Christi at Thanksgiving.
- Captain America (2/5) Watched it on the treadmill. Bleh.
- Transformers: Dark of the Moon (0/5) Basically unwatchable.
- The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (3/5) Saw it with Jose when my mom was visiting.
- Saving Mr. Banks (4/5) Saw it with my mom.
- Lawrence of Arabia (3/5) Watched it with Jose and my mom. Great cinematography and interesting story, but too long.
- Monuments Men (2/5) Made me want to read the book, but otherwise jumbled.
- Thor 2 (3/5) Entertaining enough.
So what else should we watch??

Ooh I want to see Maleficent, but doubt I’ll be able to until it comes out on DVD. I’ll keep it in mind for then!

Godzilla! Should be at the dollar soon.
HTTYD2 is okay (I don’t think as good as the first).
I hear Edge of Tomorrow is good, would like to see that.
Did you see the first Captain America (fighting in WW2) or did you see the one that came out this year? The first one was just okay. The second one was pretty awesome.
Did you see the LEGO movie? It comes out tomorrow on disk. 🙂 That one was great.
The Transformers movies after the first one have been really bad. But… I’ll probably have to see this summer because it has Optimus Prime wielding a sword while riding a T-Rex Dinobot. Oh, and Mark Wahlberg, who I usually like even in not-so-great movies.

It was the first Captain America. The latest one did look good from the previews — hopefully it’ll be out on DVD soon.
I heard Edge of Tomorrow is good too. But I’ll probably have to wait for DVD…

Loved The King’s Speech and The Book Thief (I thought the movie was superior to the book–one reason is that, contrary to what one might expect, the language was cleaned up for the movie). I thought Monuments Men was a disaster–tried, but failed, to lighten up a very interesting and serious subject. I was disappointed, because I go to every movie with a Holocaust/Jewish theme and thought the subject matter was intriguing.

Wow, you are a tough movie critic! 🙂

Do you think so? Interesting! For me, a 3/5 is “I am entertained,” 4/5 is “I liked this a lot,” and 5/5 is “wow, now THIS is a great movie.”
