U.S. Struggles to Draw Young, Savvy Staff | Wall Street Journal
Oh man. I could barely even make it through this article because my head was nodding so violently in agreement with every single point about federal government employment. Everything it says — about how the government is falling behind in the digital world, about the “deeply broken” hiring process, about baby boomers who aren’t retiring are limiting job openings and mobility — is dead on.
Dads Who Do Dishes Raise Ambitious Daughters | NY Mag
The study results suggest that parents’ domestic actions may speak louder than words. Even when fathers publicly endorsed gender equality, if they retained a traditional division of labor at home, their daughters were more likely to envision themselves in traditionally female-dominant jobs, such as nurse, teacher, librarian or stay-at-home-mom.
Interesting. I often wonder what effect having two engineer parents will have on Emma’s career ambitions. My dad was trained as an engineer and my mom is a teacher. Even though Dad left engineering so long ago that I barely remember him in that field, and Mom was a stay-at-home mom for the first 12ish (10? 15? gosh I don’t even know) years of my life, I definitely have thought about being a teacher, and obviously did become an engineer.
Then again, my parents had a pretty traditional division of labor at home. Mom did 90% of the cooking, cleaning, yardwork, etc.
You might want to reconsider that donation to the Reading Rainbow Kickstarter | Washington Post
…when Reading Rainbow began in 1983, the big question was, “how do we get kids interested in reading?” By 2009, that question had become, “how do we teach kids to read, period?”
This was an interesting article for two totally different reasons — first because of the discussion about Reading Rainbow (which I remember very fondly from my childhood) and how it was affected by changes in education philosophy, and second because of the perspective on who is “worthy” of using online crowdfunding for their cause.
(The RR Kickstarter campaign has demolished their $1 million goal — they’re at $3.5 million and counting…)
