Emma loves her books these days, and of course I love that she loves them! I thought I’d share some of our current favorites in hopes that I’ll get a few suggestions of new books to add to our collection:
Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! This was a Christmas gift from my sister. Emma is completely OBSESSED with it right now and asks for it by name (“buhsh”). I like it because it’s short, fun to read (with whiny voices and such), and has cute simple artwork.
Go Dog Go! This book is long, but it’s one I remember from my own childhood and I just like reading it. I like all the different dogs, and how it subtlely runs through concepts like colors, over/under, in/out, stop/go, etc. Also: there’s a huge epic dog party IN A TREE at the end. How cool is that?
Twenty-Four Robbers and Possum Come A-Knockin’. These were both gifts from Jen and they are both fun for Emma to listen to AND fun for me to read. Win win.
Pat the Bunny. A classic that Emma likes and is fast to read.
Rawr! This is a recent addition to our library — I bought it at the daycare’s semi-annual book fair a few weeks ago. It was a quick pick but I like the artwork and I like the overall message that everyone is good at something. And Emma likes it when I rawr. Ha!
And just because I can’t help it, here a a few books that I’m not such a fan of:
The Giving Tree. I know, I know! It’s a classic! It has a heartwarming message about giving selflessly to those you love! But come on — if someone just takes and takes and takes from you until you are nothing more than a stump…perhaps it’s time to stand up for yourself.
Green Eggs and Ham. Ok, another classic. But this is seriously the longest book ever. It just goes on and on and I get really tired of repeating myself.

It’s funny how there are books Isla likes, books I like, and some we both like. Green Eggs and Ham certainly is exhausting, as is the Cat in the Hat.

I don’t mind Go Dog Go either. I think Green Eggs is a little better when the kid is actually starting to read/recognize a few words. I don’t like reading One Fish Two Fish, personally! Also, make sure you look into the other Mo Willems books as well, if you haven’t already!

“Don’t let the pigeon stay up” is another great one. Green Eggs and Ham is also good… probably the best Dr. Seuss and it’s just the length.
“There is a monster at the end of this book” is also awesome

Just saw this great list of anti-princess books and thought of you: … we should totally follow through on the idea of a children’s book bookclub where everyone does a different kids book. I love books! http://www.amightygirl.com/mighty-girl-picks/independent-princess (my favorite title was “do princesses wear hiking boots?”
