On Saturday morning, we went downtown to check out the Architects of Air installation at Discovery Green. It was a luminaria — “a sculpture people enter to be moved to a sense of wonder at the beauty of light and color,” as their website describes it. It was SO cool!
This is what it looks like from the outside. Somehow it seemed a lot bigger once we were inside, probably since all of the pathways tended to loop back upon themselves. I’d heard that the line can get pretty long, and there’s a limit on how many people can be inside at once, so we arrived just after it opened at 10 a.m. That turned out to be perfect, and we only had to wait in line for a few minutes.
Emma was a little wary of the weird lights and funny walls at first and wanted to be held. But she warmed up pretty quickly and soon enough, she was walking from bubble to bubble, laughing when she lost her balance where the walls sloped up, and lying on the floor turning herself in circles. As soon as we walked out, she started asking for more.
There were 3 domes with ceilings like this one — one red, one blue, and one green.
This room was called “the tree” and was at the far end of the structure. It was my favorite because it was light, bright, and cool. (It was really humid out on Saturday, and some areas inside were a little stuffy in some areas.)
The center dome — or the “Grand Ballroom” as Jose decided to call it — had the tallest ceiling. All of the light just comes from outside, and the colors are created just from the light coming through the different colors of plastic.
The entire structure is inflated, and there were a few of these vents where you could feel the air coming out. Emma thought it was pretty neat.
After we left, we walked around Discovery Green and enjoyed some shaved ice. It was a really fun way to spend our morning!
