I’m sick again, and have been since Tuesday. This time it’s a bad sore throat, stuffed head, and alternating between sweating and shivering. Thanks to the beauty of telecons, I was at least able to support a couple meetings that I was on the hook for this week, even if I did sound funny. At first I thought it was just a cold, but I can usually power through colds. Now I’m wondering if it’s not some kind of flu, even though I did get a flu shot. Either way, I’m so freaking sick of being sick. This is not how I wanted to start 2014.

Emma’s had a runny nose all week, but thankfully isn’t showing any other symptoms. I don’t understand how we’ve suddenly transitioned to her being mostly healthy and ME being sick, but I guess that’s better than the alternative. I am very thankful that she can go to daycare since it would be hard to try to take care of her while feeling like crud myself.

On the plus side, being sick means I basically avoided the crazy cold weather earlier this week. It got down into the 20s on Monday night — which is REALLY cold for Houston. Our hibiscus bushes in the backyard can’t handle below-freezing temperatures and they look pretty horrible right now, but we wrapped the bottom of each bush In a sheet and in a couple months, I’ll cut them way back. I’m pretty confident they’ll rebound.

In other news, Jose and I went to the local Mazda dealership last Friday and drove both the CX-5 (a small SUV) and the 3 (a small-ish sedan). We liked the 3 a lot and were thinking about going back on Saturday to do some negotiating, but then we got cold feet. Sigh. We’re really not sure what we want, or what our priority should be.

I was looking for an old file on my computer on Monday night and ended up looking through a lot of the assignments I did for the design classes I took between 2005 and 2009. Some of the projects are so-so, but there are a few in there that I really like but had forgotten about. Since I have no idea when I’ll even get around to actually making a portfolio site, I may start sharing a few of them here. (One assignment that I did post are these NASA ads from 2006. I still love them.)

Jose got Emma a deck of Old Maid cards as a stocking stuffer for Christmas, with the thought that even though she’s not old enough to play the actual game, she would like looking at all the different characters on the cards. (He has fond memories of playing Old Maid with his cousins when he was a kid.) Well, he was right — Emma LOVES the cards. She will sit on the floor for 15 minutes or more just going through the cards, pointing out the ones wearing hats, putting the cards back in the box, etc. It’s pretty cute.

After being home sick for 4 days, I have watched a ridiculous amount of HGTV — my default channel. I’ll be ok if I don’t see any more Love It or List It or Property Brothers for a while.

When I bought my small SUV last year, the top two choices for me came down to the Mazda 5 and the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. I went with the sport for a few reasons, but the Mazda got better gas mileage. So if you have a hyundai dealership the sport might be worth looking at.

On the topic of vehicles, I can offer this bit: I was convinced we needed a van before #2 came along, but I realized later that although it was great for hauling large loads of furniture home from the in-laws’, we really didn’t need a van until #3 came along. We bought a sedan (a Hyundai Sonata) a couple years ago and we try very hard to drive it over the van, which is a guzzler. Of course, with four kids there often isn’t an option.
I hope you feel better soon! I hope you are spared the necessity of caring for a sick one when you’re feeling like crud for a long time to come. It’s the WORST.
