Several bloggers I read on a regular basis do occasional “day in the life” posts and I always enjoy them. Maybe that’s weird, or voyeuristic, or nosy? I don’t know. I just think it’s always interesting to see how other people spend their days — so I decided to do one of my own!
And with no further ado, this is my life last Thursday, June 20!
6:30 My alarm goes off. I hit snooze.
6:45 Ok ok, I get up for real. The above photo is what I see. Nothing too special there! Emma’s exersaucer is sitting on the treadmill because the cleaners had been there the day before and moved it while they vaccuumed. I stumble into the bathroom and brush my teeth.
6:50 I go wake up Emma and get her dressed. I warm up her bottle and we sit down on the couch. While she drinks in my lap, I have my phone in my other hand and usually check Facebook and Instagram…and sometimes Twitter. I haven’t been as interested in Twitter lately; I think it’s because there’s a lot of noise in my feed. It’s probably time to do a pretty big cut on who I follow.
7:00 I dial in to a telecon while Emma’s still working on her bottle and Jose is in shower. It’s going to be difficult to take good notes, but Jose should be out soon.
7:15 My telecon unexpectedly ends since the Russians turn out to be unavailable. This is a bummer because I was hoping to get a few questions answered, but at least it makes the morning easier. I take Emma into our bathroom as I put in my contacts and Jose shaves, and she immediately starts opening cabinet doors. (Note to self: add safety latches.
7:20 I stayed home from work the day before because I wasn’t feeling very well. I still don’t feel great today, so I decide to stay home again and do some telework.
7:35 Emma has a giant poopy diaper before leaving. That I change because Jose is still gathering his things. Thanks Emma!
7:40 Emma and Jose are finally out the door. He’ll drop her at daycare and then head to his office. (Daycare is onsite at JSC so it’s super convenient!) With them gone, I finally lay down on the couch for a minute…
10:10 …and I fall asleep for a good long while. I guess I really needed it! Colds are the worst — they sap all my energy. I feel like I could sleep for another few hours, but there are a couple things I need to get done before going on vacation.
10:30 Having gotten dressed and made myself an English muffin (one half with butter, one half with Nutella!), I sit down at my desk for a while. I love my home office setup for personal stuff, but it’s not the greatest for telework. I usually put my laptop to the side of my iMac and use a combination of both computers to do my work.
11:10 I have “fun” calling the JSC Clinic and then my doctor. Last night, in a moment of “I’m feeling better and want to accomplish something, anything today,” I decided to trim some bushes in our front flower bed. And in those 10 minutes, I managed to slice my finger on our garden shears, which of course are rather rusty. The JSC clinic told me my last tetanus was in 2004 so it’s been 9 years. My doctor said it couldn’t hurt to go in for the shot — if nothing else, it resets my “clock” for another 10 years. So now I get to do that today. Joy.
12:30 I take a break to fix myself some lunch — a Lean Cuisine. Technically it’s a flatbread, but I cut it like a pizza. How glamorous! I pop 2 Tylenol in hopes of clearing up my foggy head and chasing away the lingering aches. While I wait on the microwave, I admire our lovely clean kitchen! We tried out a new cleaning service yesterday and they did a great job; I’m planning to set them up to come every other week from now on. I also check social media and peek at the daycare video. Emma is no longer wearing pants, which is interesting since I definitely put her in pants this morning. Did she have an accident or did the teachers decide it was hot? A mystery…
12:40 I sit back down at my desk with my lunch. I’m trying desperately to finish a presentation that needs to be turned in before we leave tomorrow for vacation, but my fuzzy head is making it slow going. Either way, I thank my lucky stars once again for the flexibility my job allows.
1:20 It’s time to head to the doctor. I have to take the Xterra since Jose took the “good car” with Emma. (It’s funny how my Xterra always seemed fine — until we got a new car. Now it feels really old and beat up.) I’ve been listening to NPR a lot lately but they’re talking about frakking. This doesn’t interest me at all so I switch the radio to music.
1:30 I see a guy running with his dog along the side of FM 270. It’s seriously got to be about 100 degrees outside. This is the worst possible time of day to run, yet there he is. I don’t get it.
1:40 I’m sitting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office, updating paperwork.
2:25 I have to wait for a while, of course, so I pass the time reading blogs on my phone. I’ve officially switching to Feedly since Google Reader is going away and I have to admit, their iPhone app is pretty slick. I like it. When the PA finally comes in, she has me call my OBGYN’s office after realizing I’ve been pregnant in the last 2 years — since the tetanus vaccine is now combined with pertussis, some doctors are apparently giving it to pregnant women. After 10 minutes on the phone, I find out that I didn’t get it last year after all so yay, shot time. Ouch. (My arm was CRAZY SORE the entire following day, peaking in the 24-36 hour period post-shot. Seriously. So painful!) My shot records are such a mess between the JSC clinic, my primary care doc, and my OBGYN. I really should get copies myself and keep them in one place.
2:45 Frappachino reward! Yay!
3:05 Back home and back to work. The Tylenol kicked in a while ago so I’m feeling almost back to normal and hopeful that this stupid cold is on its way out.
3:35 I put the final touches on my presentation and send it off to a few folks for review. It’s about the antenna issue that occurred on the last Russian Progress cargo flight, and it’ll be presented next week at two different reviews. Since I’ll be out of town, Melissa graciously “volunteered” to sub for me.
4:20 Jose texts me to say he’s leaving to go get Emma. Normally I’d be picking her up and heading to her swimming class, but with my crud and her crud/cough, we chose to skip tonight. I think we’ve missed as many swimming classes as we’ve made due to various illnesses. This kind of annoys me, but it is what it is.
4:30 I check in on the daycare video and see Emma sitting on the floor. the difference between January when she started and now is huge — there are always babies everywhere. The 3 oldest in the class (all born in May 2012) are walking, so they’re always visible toddling around. It’s really cute. Emma is playing with a block and looks pretty content. Still not wearing pants though!
4:35 I see Jose walk in on the daycare video and Emma gives up trying to climb the side of a crib to crawl excitedly over to him. They should be home in about 30 minutes — which means it’s time for me to start wrapping up. I just got feedback on the presentation I sent out an hour ago, so I spend the time making those updates.
5:00 I watch from the office as Jose pulls into the driveway with Emma, so work is done for the moment. I didn’t quite finish updating my charts so I’ll have to finish them either later tonight or tomorrow morning before we hit the road to Port Aransas. I ended up teleworking for ~4 hours today — not bad for a sick day with an unexpected tetanus shot on top of that. I’m feeling tons better than I did this morning so I decide to stick with the plans I made a few weeks ago to go out to dinner with girlfriends tonight.
5:20 It’s playtime with Emma in her room. She plays with her activity table and pulls books off the shelf while Jose and I talk about our days and make plans for tomorrow — what to pack, when to leave, etc.
5:30 Jose’s mom wants to Skype, so he and Emma sit down in the office to talk to her. I listen for a bit, but then go into the kitchen and empty the dishwasher.
5:50 Emma gets squirmy, so the Skype session quickly ends. Emma pushes her walker around and plays on her play mat while Jose and I hang around watching her and just relaxing. She’s figured out how to trigger the music on one if her toys — which has the potential to get really annoying really fast, but she’s having so much fun dancing to it that I leave her to it instead of turning the sound off.
6:00 I try on some new “shoes” that I got for Emma from Zulily. They’re soft soles — really more like booties. She seems confused by what’s on her feet!
6:10 Dinner time! On the menu tonight are sweet potato chunks, mango, applesauce and some puffs. The mango is in chunks too, but it’s too juicy for Emma to pick up on her own. She’s starting to eat more and more non-pureed foods.
6:35 Dinner’s over. She seemed to get tired of the potato and mango towards the end; maybe it’s the texture? I clean up from her dinner and start a load of baby laundry in prep for our trip. Emma plays on the floor while Jose watches TV and I sneak in about 10 minutes of cross stitch.
6:55 Emma bids me farewell with a poopy diaper, which I volunteered to change since Jose’s on bedtime duty tonight. Ick! That’s two big poopy ones in one day! No fair. If only I could train her to poop only at daycare…right??
7:05 I’m on my way to meet friends for dinner in Kemah!
10:55 Reluctantly head home after a very fun evening. We tried a new (to us, anyway) place in Kemah called Tabella. I’d never noticed it before despite the fact that it’s right behind the always-busy T-Bone Tom’s. I had a Groupon for a four-course tasting menu, but I definitely want to go back sometime to try a few of the other items on the menu. It was a tiny, cozy place — good for future date nights as well!
11:10 The drive back home is quick — hooray for catching all green lights! I lie in the couch with Jose and talk for a while. I’m tired but the achiness of earlier today has stayed away. Hopefully it’s gone for good. (Side note: it wasn’t. It came back Friday night after arriving in Port Aransas. And stayed for several more days. Joy.)
11:55 I drag myself into the bathroom to get ready for bed.
12:10 Annnnnd…lights out. Good thing it’s not a school night for me! Can’t wait for vacation tomorrow!
