I mentioned about a week and a half ago that Jose and I were going to take Emma with us to the annual Bayou City Art Festival this year. We’ve gone every year we’ve been together (I think) so it’s kind of a tradition at this point! We hatched a detailed plan of attack that involved feeding Emma before we left to keep her happy in the car, pushing her around in the stroller at the festival (she fell asleep), and then finding a quiet corner to feed her again before heading home. It worked perfectly and we all had a fun time.
Some of my favorites in 2012:
- Our only purchase this year was a print of a detailed pen and ink drawing of the Urrea Oaks, two trees that we see on the way to Corpus Christi, by Big Tree Studio. After we bought it, we discovered the artist also has a Ph.D. in geophysics. An artist and a scientist — our kind of guy indeed! We’re going to hang it in the office or the bonus room.
- Jennifer Cavan has been at the festival for the past several years. I really wish she sold print, because I love the look of her landscapes (especially the ones with starry skies) but the prices for the originals are too much for me.
- I remember seeing Stirling Barrett last year as well. He does neat photo mosaics — you’ve probably seen stuff like this before (I even have made a few simple ones myself), but he elevates it a bit with cool results.
I always check out the jewelry booths, and this year was the first in a while that I haven’t bought something for myself. I guess I was just feeling frugal, but these three, among others, caught my eye:
- Victoria Varga had a cool collection of bright, graphic pieces.
- Donna D’Aquino had a lot of really neat structural metal pieces, and from the look of her website, high fashion sources like Vogue agree with me in thinking they were intriguing. If I’d bought anything, it probably would have been one of her necklaces.
- Nichole Collins had a variety of different things, some colorful and some just simple metal.
Till next year!

Oh man, it’s a good thing I didn’t go. I would’ve spent my whole savings on that jewelry. SO pretty!!!
