Columbus Day is my favorite random holiday. We rarely go out of town, so it always means a nice extra day at home — and since it’s always October, it means the weather is usually nice! It absolutely poured all day on Sunday (hooray for rain) but yesterday the skies cleared and we had a pleasant sunny day. While Jose went to class, I did some spring cleaning. Although I guess we’ll call it fall cleaning. The office started out like this:
It’s pretty much my typical organization method: piles of things that need to either be trashed or put in a proper place. I made some progress yesterday but have a way to go. My goal is to get it all cleaned up by the end of this coming weekend.
After such mundane cleaning and organizing tasks, Jose and I had a fun evening. We had dinner with friends at Star Pizza to celebrate Jen’s birthday, and had the Salsa Verde pizza which is described as: “spicy tomatillo topped with roasted poblano peppers, pan-fried garlic and feta cheese.” It was SO tasty.
After that, Jose and I went to see Death Cab for Cutie at the Verizon Theater downtown. We don’t go to that many concerns and I’d never been to that venue before. I liked it a lot. It’s set up similarly to House of Blues with standing room on the floor and a U-shaped balcony above — but it’s a bit bigger than HOB. I don’t think it was sold out, as we had plenty of room to move around. Not having to cram yourself into a large crowd is a plus in my opinion.
The concert itself was great, and they played all the big hits as well as some earlier stuff. Jose knows their early stuff well, and I know the later stuff — between the two of us, we were a complete Death Cab fan, I suppose. The only downside was the sound…which was pretty awful, especially in the first half of the concert. I expect concerts to be loud, but I also expect the sound to be balanced. For the first half, the bass drum and bass guitar were so overpowering that I could barely hear Ben Gibbard singing at all, and the vibration in my chest from the deep sound was physically uncomfortable. We moved from the side of the theater towards the middle, which helped only slightly. Things improved towards the end, and I enjoyed that part much more.
Still, we went to a concert! On a “school night!” I feel young and hip again!
