I got a much-needed haircut after work yesterday. It’s not drastically different from anything I’ve had before, just below my shoulders with layers on top, but she styled it wavy instead of straight. When I left the salon, it looked huge and ratty but it calmed down a bit as the evening went on and looked pretty good last night. It even looked good this morning when I rolled out of bed — I had the messy bed-head thing going on, but in a good way.
It is looking kind of weird today because despite my shower this morning and thorough shampooing, I don’t think I got all the goop from yesterday out. And this brings me to my point: going to the salon always makes me feel like I’m really bad at being a girl. The conversation usually goes something like this:
Her: What do you use to style your hair?
Me: Um, nothing.
Her: You just blow dry it?
Me: I usually leave the house with damp hair. And often use the a/c system in my car as a blow drier. Does that count?
Needless to say, to a hairdresser, that doesn’t count.
(After that, to add insult to injury, I usually become acutely aware of the fact that I am not wearing any makeup. Because I don’t wear makeup on a daily basis.)
My hair looked great last night precisely because she spent 15 minutes gooping it up — with so much product that a single shampoo didn’t get it all out — and then carefully drying it with a diffuser. This is more than I am capable of doing on a normal day, and possibly more than I’m able to successfully pull off even if I tried.
I am a disgrace to girls everywhere.

You have totally described me. I have the vents set in my car so that my soaking wet hair at home is completely dry when I reach work. The haircut looks cute!

I am so right there with you. I don’t even use a hair drier. The A/C vents in my car are aimed at my head.

You are not a disgrace to girls everywhere — your hair looks great. You must get your inability to “style” hair from your mom — I’m even worse, I go to bed with my hair wet!!

I am the same as you – and the same as my Mom. Rarely wear makeup, rarely dry my hair, never any styling products. I’m not sure that I really feel guilty about this. I do feel a bit bad going into work with damp hair, but c’est la vie. I feel a bit dowdy on the rare occasions when I go to the mall or something and encounter more glamorous women.

You aren’t a disgrace – you may not be a girly girl, but you’re a great example of “girl power”! You’re smart, you’re educated, you are an athlete and you rock! I am a bit of a girly girl, but I still get annoyed with the amount of goop that the stylist folks put on my hair! That and they always style it so it’s hanging in my face…why???? As if I’d walk around with my hair covering my eye.

You describe me as well. I hate styling product in my hair. Makes me feel grubby all day. I so need a haircut though.
