I figured it’s time to replace Tuesday’s rant with a similarly scattered but less disgruntled post.
Sleep shifting is going as well as can be reasonably expected. I won’t even start to explain when I’ve been sleeping over the past couple days because it makes my head hurt. Suffice it to say that I’ve been sleeping in 3 or 4 hour chunks which means that I’m awake when I need to be, but feel a bit out-of-sorts.
At the moment it’s 3:30 am. I slept for a few hours earlier in the evening in hopes of increasing my chances of making it till 6 am. Thank goodness for the royal wedding! I can’t believe I’m saying that, but I am. I had no plans to do anything other than look at photos online after the hubbub ended — I do want to see what the bride wears; I think she’s gorgeous to begin with, so I’m sure she’ll be stunning — but that was before I realized I’d be awake anyway. It’s better than the 4 am infomercials, that’s for sure.
Plus, seeing all these shots of famous London landmarks is making me REALLY excited for our trip there next month!
CNN is going strong with a couple over-the-top “royal experts” and Anderson Cooper outside Buckingham Palace. Seems like Anderson Cooper was just in Japan reporting on the earthquake. Real news story vs. celebrity news story. I wonder if he ever finds himself bemoaning the state of the news today? Considering it’s made him famous, probably not.
This royal expert is really harping on the fact that the buses carrying various heads of state to the wedding are actually motor coaches. “They are motor coaches, NOT buses!” Same thing, dude.
After much perusing of Wikipedia, I still have no idea how royal titles are determined for those who marry into the royal family. Queen Elizabeth’s husband is Prince Philip, not King Philip. But her mother, who married King George, was called Queen, not Princess? And Kate will apparently be a Duchess…not a princess? The titles all seem rather arbitrary. I’m so confused.
I’m also confused about what the royal family actually does these days since they’re not the heads of state. Or maybe they are the heads of state, but they don’t control the government. Oh, you know what I mean. But that’s another issue.
Perhaps that’s why royal weddings and other royal activities get so much attention here. We don’t have royals. They seem exotic, or something.
These are apparently the things you wonder about in the wee hours of the morning when there’s nothing else on TV.
p.s. There are some wild and crazy hats on these women walking into Westminster Abbey. It looks like something out of Dr. Seuss. I think I love it.

I think that Prince Philip is not King because he ISN’T the King. He is Queen Elizabeth’s husband. King is reserved for the ruling monarch. But the wife of the King is called Queen so that covers Elizabeth’s mother and will be what Kate is called when William becomes King. Kate is a commoner so right now she will not be called Princess, but instead Her Royal Highness.

it made me remember all those places i went to over there! i spent 3 weeks there in 1996 and it was awesome!!!

Yeah, basically the title Queen is inferior to King always. Thus if you are the Queen and you marry someone they cannot be King so they have to come up with something else. I’m not really sure why Kate cannot be a princess since following the same logic it is inferior to prince — but what do I know.

I wish we got to wear hats more in the US. In Ireland, the mother of the bride always wears a mad hat, and the mother of the groom gets to wear the second coolest hat. I forgot to suggest my mom wear a cool hat to mine, but maybe for my sister’s wedding. 😉

I did wait until it’s over and caught the pictures. Kate was stunning, so elegant. As for some of the hats? Holy cow! The Daily Mail online termed the hats, “Fascinators”

Oh, and I was wondering about the titles too. I found this explanation… well, sort of an explanation. I have to draw a diagram to follow it!

I loved the hats — all different and some rather bizarre. The ones worn by Prince Andrew’s daughters were rather ugly.
