What was the best thing you learned about yourself this past year? And how will you apply that lesson going forward?
I learned two important lessons this year, one good and one bad. However, both are work-related so this entry will be short and vague.
- Trust your gut. This year, the shuttle program was winding down and I found myself smack in the “mid-career” bracket. I was ready for a change, ready for some new experiences, ready to have more responsibility. At one point I had the opportunity to make a career move and came very close to doing so — but in my gut, it just didn’t feel like it was the right thing for me. So I turned it down. That was REALLY hard to do. But months later when the opportunity to work Russian vehicles came along, I saw that I had made the right decision. I’m really enjoying this new job so far and I am learning SO MUCH. If I had taken the first opportunity, I wouldn’t have been available for this one.
- Watch what you say. You might be among friends. You might not be at work. You might not even be the one saying it, but you happen to be sitting at the same table as those who are. Whatever the case is, you still have to be cautious of what’s being said and how that could affect you down the line.

This month, I’m participating in Reverb10, which charges you to “reflect on your year and manifest what’s next.” There’s a different prompt every day.
