I spent all of Thursday sleep-shifting — or, more accurately as it’s known in NASA flight controller language, SLAM-shifting — onto the midnight-9 a.m. shift that I’m working in support of the STS-131 undocking. I’ve got to support Thursday night/Friday morning and Friday night/Saturday morning, and the hours are obviously about as UNdesirable as a girl can get.
I had a difficult time figuring out the best way to shift, and I didn’t actually start until we got home from the final Rockets game of the season on Wednesday night. It took pencil and paper for me to figure out what I needed to do, since my brain really wasn’t working. In the end, I forced myself to get up at 4 a.m. Thursday morning, then forced myself back into bed at 5 p.m. I was up again at 11 p.m. and voila. Here I am, ready to support the mission for two more days. In theory I should be ok, since the math tells me that I’ve gotten 10 hours of sleep in the past 30 hours. In reality, well, we’ll see.
I spent a lot of time being lazy during the 13 hours I was awake at home on Thursday, surfing the web and watching TV. Around 3:30, I decided it was high time I did something productive, so I randomly decided I would finally install a shelf I bought months ago with the intention of putting it above the kitchen sink.
Half an hour later, it was done and I felt like I’d saved the day from complete and utter laziness. Then I wiped down all the countertops and swept the floor. Productivity! I put a couple decorative items up on the shelf (which was my grand plan from the start) and I think it looks really nice. But I do have to laugh at myself now for having plates on display. That seems like such an old lady thing to do.
The plate on the left and the pitcher in the middle are both from Eldreth Pottery, a cool studio in Oxford, Pennsylvania close to my family’s dairy farm. We used to go over there every summer when we visited my grandmother and extended family. The plate on the left is from my mom, and the pitcher was a wedding present from my cousin. Yes, they both have cows on them. I love my cow pottery!
The wooden fish is from Belize. We bought it from a guy who had a tent set up right on the main road in Placencia. (The main road is also the ONLY road.) It reminds me of scuba diving. It doesn’t fit on that plate stand very well, so I’ll have to figure something else out.
Next up? Maybe I’ll finish painting the kitchen…?

It looks nice. I also love that you have a window behind your sink, I really like that style in general. You should get some small spice planters and grown them in that window.

Don’t worry, I’m more of an old lady than you. I have a cow plate PLUS a cross stitch up in my kitchen. 🙂

Um, I have plates on display. And cross-stitch. And pot-holders.
Mom says
I love the shelf — looks great w/ your cabinets. Visited Eldreth last week and made a purchase which you will get in June 🙂

Never fear, Katie & Jen — I will have a cross stitch up too…as soon as I finish it. Haha.
No pot holders though.
And no roosters! Jose has a thing for country roosters. Ick! 🙂

Displaying stuff is fun. I note the side of your refrigerator is full-function as well.
