Question for my female running friends: do you wear your engagement/wedding ring while running? So far, I’ve been taking mine off — I can’t help but think “ooh but it’s so pretty and shiny and I don’t want to get it all sweaty.” But I don’t really like taking it off, mainly because I’m paranoid that I will put it down somewhere and lose it. So I’m curious. What do others do?
It’s been a weird couple days. I’d planned to work three days this week, with two of them being days on console. I was going to take Friday off. Then the mission slipped and one of my two days on console is now the Thursday night/Friday morning graveyard shift. So I took my day off yesterday! I haven’t been to work in more than 48 hours (though I go in at 11:00 tonight), which makes me feel a little like I’m playing hooky. But only a little. I’ve taken advantage of the extra downtime at home to get some work done on my final projects for classes, go running during the day, catch up on America’s Next Top Model (much to Jose’s chagrin), do some wedding planning (I know — already), and generally bum around my apartment.
I’m thinking of starting a sub-blog just for my wedding stuff. I’m no Bridezilla, but I do love the plan. (In fact, I think I’m often better at planning than I am at actually executing those plans.) I’ve got all sorts of thoughts swirling around that I want to get out, but while I know some of you will be interested, I also know that some of you will definitely not care. So we’ll see. We’re thinking early June, which means the planning starts now. My three biggest priorities are 1) getting a cool venue, 2) getting a fabulous photographer and 3) not spending my entire life’s savings on a single day.
Boiling sweet potatoes. My favorite Thanksgiving dish! Mmmm.
We managed to salvage a bit of Thanksgiving. I get off work tomorrow morning at 8, and after a short nap, we get to go over to Gavin and Jen’s for Thanksgiving lunch. Byron talked Becca into making a huge turkey with stuffing, and I’m making sweet potatoes, so it should be pretty tasty. I just hope I can stay awake! I’m not really looking forward to working these next two shifts, despite the whole “but I’m supporting people in space!” thing. Fact is, things are going very well from a rendezvous and undocking perspective. And when things go smoothly, we have very little to do. So while boring is good, it is still, well, boring. I’ve already got a list of little things to catch up on to keep me occupied during the wee hours of the morning.
If you’re one of my aerospace/NASA buddies, Jose posted a new blog entry that might interest you. That makes 4 whole entries this year for him! 😉

I don’t know about you, but whenever I run or hike or otherwise exert myself my hands always swell, and wearing a ring would not be a good idea. you might try Jen’s necklace method to avoid loss.
Sarah says
Yeah, I like Jen’s necklace idea, except that still doesn’t work for running — I wouldn’t want something dangling on my neck, not to mention it would still get sweaty there.
As for sizing, I got the ring sized down 1/4 of a size when we got back from Japan, but it is still pretty loose right now. I’m hesitant to get it sized down anymore, because when I get back from running and I’m all hot, the ring fits almost perfectly — actually a bit too tight (it’s hard to get it off). So I think when summer comes, it’ll fit fine. Guess I’ll just have to get used to it fitting loose in the winter.
JP says
I still can’t believe I got to within 1/4 of your ring size by just noting where on my finger your other rings jammed!
Sarah says
That’s because you are awesome. And cute.
Michelle says
Sarah – I had the same debate over my rings. I actually went and bought myself a jewelry box so that I always had one dedicated place to put my rings whenever I took them off.
As far as the running, I prefer to take them off, but I’ve also worn both for a few miles at a time. I’ve found that my fingers don’t swell enough for it to be a problem.
Can’t yet comment about the long-term effects of sweat.
Jen says
So do we get to comment/suggest things on this wedding blog? My hairdresser does the bridal expo every year. He might have some good ideas…
Melanie says
I don’t usually wear mine running, but I ran with it during the Turkey Trot this morning and it was fine. My ring is loose in the winter too, but not so much that it would slide past my knuckle. I won’t wear it to the gym though because I don’t want it to get scratched on any of the equipment or free weights. But there I guess the necklace idea would work well.
Jamoosh says
Not the female, but…
It only took one time for my wedding band to come flying off my finger for me to look at an alternative. Since I am slightly retarded and misplace things, the necklace option has worked well. In fact, my ring has been around my neck for over five years now.
Gaslight says
I never take mine off, not because I’m that sentimental or traditional, but because I’m terrified of losing it or having it stolen from my car. (Ok, so I do take is off for manicures, but it’s hooked onto my watchband and in my purse.)
My ring, however, has only channel-set stones, bought purely because I am a grade-A class 1 klutz who might her eye out with anything pointy.
Crosstrain says
Well I lost mine in the snow many years ago playing with my kids. It also fell off in a bar in Switzerland once and bounced into my pleated pants. So I am with JD on safety first.
Jennifer says
No engagement ring here, but I used to wear a claddagh given to me by a family member around the clock. I foudn the only way not to misplace it was to never take it off. At first, it used to irritate me when running, since the metal would get cold, and in the shower, but I got used to it after a while.
I support a wedding blog – I’m sure you have a few female readers who’d be happy to see that, and it might be neat to have a record of that part of your life.

I wear mine all the time. If I don’t, I just worry way too much. And you can always have it cleaned if it gets a little dingy from sweat. 🙂 A lot of jewelry stores will clean rings for free or really cheap.
And if it is loose enough still to make you nervous about it falling off, I’d get it sized down even more. If it’s just a little loose that’s not a big deal but if it’s loose enough to fall off without you noticing that would be bad!
Katie says
I forgot one thing. If your ring is white gold you may have to get it replated at some point anyway because the rhodium which makes it really “white” wears off over time. I have not had mine replated yet so they are definitely less shiny now and my engagement ring has a yellow tint on the underside where it rubs against things more. My guess is that sweat might accelerate how fast the plating wears off, but I’m not sure.

I have worn my rings for many workouts, usually because I forget to take them off and leave at home. Unless I take them off at home and put them in the box where I know they are, I just wear them. I get mine cleaned every 3 or 4 months. I would not take them off and put in them in a pocket or your bag or a locker at the gym- leave at home or wear.
Tiggs says
Ok, re: wedding things. If you mean June 2009, you may have a very hard time getting a venue this late. Yes, I know that sounds crazy. But its true. This is really late to plan a June 09 wedding. Are you thinking the Clear Lake area or actual Houston? The CL area will be cheaper but I didn’t research any venues there so I’m no help. If you are thinking actual Houston, I have some ideas for you. Let me know.
Edwin’s wife- Donna- is a great photographer. We were going to hire her, but we have a family friend who is also fabulous, so we ended up using him. Check out Donna’s stuff. You’d have to to pay her travel, but she’s not that far away. http://www.donnaquarles.com/

I always wear my rings. Mostly for sentimental reasons…I like feeling like Petey is with me as long as I have them on = )
But on a long run, I can look down and watch them sparkle in the sunlight and it gives me a nice distraction for a bit…brings back good memories and leads to other memories and dreams and such.
So I FOR SURE wear them during a marathon! hahahaaha
Karen says
I take off my engagement ring, but leave the wedding band on. I’m with the others that a dedicated place in your apt is necessary.
Don’t way about the dirt. Rings clean easily and quickly.
Though if you don’t already have an insurance policy on the ring you should get one. It will cut down or the worry and is not expensive.
I’m all for a wedding blog. I want to see how you manage to plan this wedding in less than 6 months.
Tracy says
Ok I don’t run, but I never take my ring off. Just take it once a month and have it cleaned/inspected from where you bought it… that’s what I do. Lewis Jewelers is awesome about that.
So what’s all this wedding blog talk? I think you should so start one… if we’re voting 🙂

I wear mine at all times…even in the shower. The only time I’ve taken mine off is to get a mani and when I’ve been in labor and delivery to have the kiddos (they don’t let you wear jewelry).
