The doctor has requested an MRI on my knee. This does not make me happy 1) because MRIs are expensive (even though I’m sure insurance will cover most of it) and 2) because I feel silly going through all this doctor stuff for a knee that hurts, but not so much that it stops me from running or walking or doing anything.
Anyway. I go for the MRI tomorrow, then back to the doctor next Monday. The MRI will tell him whether it is knee goop that can be dissolved with a cortisone shot (ooh, how Jeff Bagwell of me), or whether it is scar tissue that should be “scoped” which is short for “arthroscopic” which means “cleaning out knee gunk after cutting into your knee.” I have never had surgery on anything before in my life, so I really do not like the sound of the second option.
Stupid knee.

I guess it’s probably better to resolve knee problems now when you can still walk. Hope Option #2 doesn’t happen.

Hey Sarah- I might be right there with you on the MRI thing. Seeing the orthopedic in the morning- got one knee that looks like a grapefruit right now!!

Sarah, MRIs are cool. They aren’t nearly as expensive as they used to be, and they will tell the doc for certain what he/she is dealing with. Believe me getting you knee properly diagnosed and fixed is a very good thing. Otherwise you usually end up doing more damage to it.
Keep me posted on what he says.

Oh, and in the mean time don’t buy any tickets for the camping just yet. I’m not sure how long it takes to recover from “scoping”.

Oh, I’ve had an MRI before, agreed that they are cool. But I have to pay $170 which sucks. And I thought about the camping thing, and I could totally put off scoping till after camping if necessay. I mean, my knee’s been hurting for 6 months, another 3 won’t be awful. 🙂

I’ve had my knee scoped. I tore a ligament clean off in my youth and they had to pin it back arthroscopically. i was walking with in a week or two (with no PT!) – same thing with my mom who had her knee scoped for a different reason a month ago…walking in a week. though us freyman are quite strong willed about the walking quickly thing. It really isn’t a big deal. Better to get it taken care of now when you have good insurance, vacation time, and no kids.
plus you want to avoid at all cost getting to a point where they can’t scope it anymore and have to slice it open. you are then looking at way way way more down time and pain.
