This survey, about homosexuality and sports, is a bit disturbing:
- 27% say that greater acceptance of gays and lesbians would be a bad thing for the country
- 22% say it is not ok for gay athletes to participate in sports, even if they are open about their sexuality
- 24% would be less of a fan of a particular athlete if they knew he or she was openly gay
- 21% would enjoy the sport less if they knew a player was gay
- 37% think it is not appropriate for homosexuals to be little league coaches
- 19% think that positive portrayals of gay athletes in the media may encourage children to become gay
We (as in, the public) are mostly ok with the fact that Barry Bonds may be on steroids, but we’re not ok with the fact that there might be a power hitter out there who is — gasp — gay? Pardon me while I gag.
What I find is particularly weird is this conception that gay men are pedophiles. Why is that? No one worries about leaving their daughter alone around a heterosexual man – why do they think a gay man would behave differently?
Yes, this story makes me want to gag too.
